Looks like the Devil reads IndieWire. Or maybe the buzz out of the festival circuit was just that good? <\/p>\n

Either way, crack open the communion wine and get ready to praise Pazuzu \u2014 because \u201cBoorman and the Devil<\/a>,\u201d David Kittredge<\/a>\u2019s dazzling new documentary<\/a> about the making of \u201cExorcist II: The Heretic<\/a>,\u201d is finally coming to theaters. When IndieWire reviewed \u201cBoorman and the Devil\u201d out of the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival<\/a> last fall, it had somehow endured months of exhibition without securing U.S. distribution. <\/p>\n

That was, frankly, ridiculous, and our coverage said as much, arguing that this deep dive into one of Hollywood\u2019s most notorious genre disasters<\/a> deserved a much wider release. Now, it\u2019s getting one, and we\u2019ve got the exclusive<\/a> trailer to prove it.<\/p>\n

Yellow Veil Pictures will bring \u201cBoorman and the Devil\u201d to the Quad in New York beginning August 28, before expanding September 4 to Los Angeles, Columbus, Houston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Seattle, and more cities to be announced at a later date.<\/p>\n

Released in 1977, \u201cExorcist II: The Heretic\u201d was the legendary John Boorman<\/a>\u2019s spectacularly strange follow-up to William Friedkin\u2019s \u201cThe Exorcist\u201d \u2014 and it badly disappointed audiences. Linda Blair returned as Regan MacNeil, but rather than serving up another round of demonic possession, the \u201cDeliverance\u201d and \u201cZardoz\u201d filmmaker attempted something much weirder, vaguely spiritual, and way more ambitious.<\/p>\n

\u201cExorcist II: The Heretic\u201d includes James Earl Jones dressed as a giant locust and Blair tap-dancing, among other bizarre beats. William Goodhart\u2019s script revolved around The Synchronizer, a supernatural contraption so baffling that unionized crew members reportedly had to debate whether it was a light or a prop. Behind the scenes, illnesses, accidents, delays, and a rapidly ballooning budget only added to the chaos \u2014 much like, of course, Friedkin\u2019s own allegedly cursed set.<\/p>\n

Nearly 50 years later, Kittredge allows Boorman to revisit that cinematic circle of hell himself in a nuanced and surprisingly emotional documentary that hangs with you long after seeing it. Blair and the late Louise Fletcher also appear, alongside Karyn Kusama, Joe Dante, Mike Flanagan, and more. Their collective testimony asks a more interesting question than whether \u201cExorcist II: The Heretic\u201d is secretly good, contemplating instead what we lose when Hollywood stops taking real swings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI miss big, ambitious filmmaking that takes huge risks,\u201d Kittredge said in a statement, arguing that Boorman\u2019s enormous creative and commercial gamble \u201cdidn\u2019t connect with almost anybody at the time\u201d but nevertheless remains an example of why efforts like these are \u201cwhat going to the movies is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n

IndieWire gave \u201cBoorman and the Devil\u201d a B+ in 2025, calling it \u201ca sparkling on-ramp to New Hollywood history and Boorman\u2019s astonishing career.\u201d<\/p>\n
