{"id":720342,"date":"2026-07-31T05:20:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T05:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/720342\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T05:20:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T05:20:10","slug":"world-renowned-climber-nirmal-purja-among-10-feared-missing-after-avalanche-on-pakistan-mountain-mountaineering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/720342\/","title":{"rendered":"World-renowned climber Nirmal Purja among 10 feared missing after avalanche on Pakistan mountain | Mountaineering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The world-renowned climber Nirmal Purja \u2013 a former British Special Forces member \u2013 is among 10 climbers feared missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/pakistan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pakistan<\/a>, one of the world\u2019s highest mountains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Purja, who is Nepalese born and also known as Nims Dai, made history in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/nov\/01\/nirmal-nims-purja-speed-climber-worlds-14-highest-peaks-everest\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climbing all of the world\u2019s 14 peaks over 8,000 metres<\/a> in just over six months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The Alpine Club of Pakistan received \u201cdeeply concerning\u201d reports on Thursday that an avalanche had struck the team led by Purja, aged 43. There has been no communication from the climbers since, the club vice-president, Karrar Haidri, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The expedition includes five Nepalese climbers, and a US, Pakistani, Omani and Chinese national. Another foreign climber is also part of the group, Haidri said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The alpine club has been in contact with government officials to facilitate a search and rescue operation, including helicopters if weather permits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe club prays for the safety and successful rescue of all the climbers and stands in solidarity with their families and the international mountaineering community during this difficult time,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The 8,047-metre (26,401-foot) Broad Peak in the Karakoram range is the world\u2019s 12th highest mountain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Purja\u2019s profile was boosted after he starred in a 2021 Netflix documentary chronicling his attempt to climb the world\u2019s 14 highest mountains in less than a year.
