Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, with the full support of the Craven estate.

At the time, very few details accompanied the announcement, leaving fans with more questions than answers.

The biggest one? How exactly would Paramount move forward when Warner Bros. still controls the franchise’s international rights?

As we’ve discussed before, the legal situation surrounding A Nightmare on Elm Street is complicated. Following Wes Craven’s death, attorney Marc Toberoff helped the Craven estate regain the domestic rights to the filmmaker’s original A Nightmare on Elm Street screenplay, which are now controlled by the estate. Warner Bros., however, continues to hold the international rights, creating an unusual situation where neither studio possesses complete worldwide control of the property.

Now, a new report from Kim Masters at Puck suggests that legal complexity has sparked an all-out race between the two studios.

According to Masters, Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy were less than thrilled with Paramount’s plans.

“Sources with knowledge of the matter think Paramount figured that by the time their movie got underway, the WarnerMount deal would have closed and Warners would be compelled to release the Paramount version overseas. But Warners’ Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy didn’t care for that plan. Now they’re looking to make their own movie, which they can only distribute overseas, and are in talks with Lee Cronin to produce, write, and direct.”

While I can’t independently verify every detail in Puck‘s report, I will say this: I’ve heard remarkably similar chatter from multiple industry sources over the past couple of weeks. That doesn’t automatically make it true—Hollywood is full of posturing, strategic leaks, and competing narratives—but enough people have been telling the same story that it’s hard to dismiss outright.

If true, that would mean the filmmaker behind Evil Dead Rise and The Mummy could be developing an entirely separate Nightmare on Elm Street for Warner Bros.

Masters also reports that Paramount strongly disputes any suggestion that its deal relied on the pending Skydance-Paramount merger.

A source close to Paramount Primal told Puck:

“The domestic rights deal for the original A Nightmare on Elm Street screenplay was negotiated independently and was not based on any expectation beyond the domestic rights themselves.”

The report goes on to claim that Warner Bros. had previously approached the Craven estate, but negotiations reportedly broke down.

According to a knowledgeable source quoted by Puck, Warner “wasn’t willing to go along with ‘a very aggressive back-end split with the rights holders.’”

That, according to the report, helped pave the way for Paramount’s deal with the estate, which includes Iya Labunka, Jonathan Craven, and attorney Marc Toberoff as producers.

One thing I do think is worth emphasizing is Paramount’s argument that it has the blessing of the Craven estate. Whether you’re talking about legal rights or fan goodwill, that matters. Wes Craven’s family is choosing who they believe should carry forward his legacy, and I think horror fans should pay attention to that. There’s something reassuring about knowing the people closest to Craven want to be involved in shaping what comes next instead of simply handing the franchise over to the highest bidder.

Perhaps the most fascinating part of the report is what it suggests could happen next.

Masters writes that Warner Bros.’ apparent strategy is to beat Paramount into production, potentially forcing Paramount to reconsider its own film. Paramount, however, doesn’t appear interested in backing down.

There is one point in the Puck piece that I’d push back on, though. The suggestion that Paramount is somehow limited to making a “shot-by-shot remake” because of its deal isn’t my understanding of the situation. From everything I’ve heard, the agreement requires the new film to originate from Craven’s original screenplay, but that’s very different from saying the finished movie has to recreate the 1984 film scene for scene. Those are two completely different things.

One insider summed up Paramount’s mindset in no uncertain terms:

“I think we’ve got a bit of a race… We’re going to do our fucking damndest to beat them.”

If this reporting proves accurate, horror fans could be witnessing one of the strangest studio battles in recent memory.

It’s important to note that much of this remains unconfirmed outside of Puck‘s reporting, and neither Paramount nor Warner Bros. publicly commented on the story. But if these behind-the-scenes negotiations are unfolding the way they’re described, A Nightmare on Elm Street has become far more than the return of one of horror’s greatest franchises—it’s become a game of corporate chicken between two major studios.

Personally, if this really does become a battle between two competing A Nightmare on Elm Street movies, I already know which side I’m rooting for.

Give me the production that’s being built alongside Wes Craven’s family over a studio scrambling to get a competing version into production first.

And if Warner Bros.’ answer is simply announcing Lee Cronin? That doesn’t exactly strike me as the home run the studio may think it is. I enjoyed Evil Dead Rise, and The Mummy wasn’t my cup of tea, but if I’m choosing between the team assembled by Paramount – with the blessing of the Craven estate – and a reactionary Warner Bros. production, that’s not a difficult decision for me.

If this report is accurate, this isn’t just a race to make the next A Nightmare on Elm Street. It’s a fight over who gets to define Freddy Krueger’s future. Speaking as someone who’s loved this franchise for decades, I’d rather see the people entrusted by Wes Craven’s own family carry that torch than watch two studios play corporate chicken over one of horror’s most important legacies.

What do you think?

Tags: a nightmare on elm street

Categorized:News

BREAKING: Just a few weeks ago, horror fans were stunned when Paramount announced that it had secured the…

[27
19652,96,2839,56,54,55
post-720417","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-a-nightmare-on-elm-street","tag-entertainment","tag-movies","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
