It will see the two probes maneuver in close proximity to one another and fly in &#8220;formation&#8221; so mission operators can better understand the gravitational effects spacecraft experience in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-force-guidance-for-moon-cislunar-space\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-force-guidance-for-moon-cislunar-space\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-force-guidance-for-moon-cislunar-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cislunar space<\/a>. This area of space is under the influence of both Earth&#8217;s gravity and the moon&#8217;s, meaning spacecraft operating there will have to navigate what are known as &#8220;three-body orbits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-fc51ac0e-8ab0-11f1-9a28-ab1d4d031d22-2\">While testing spacecraft maneuverability in these complex orbits, CAPSTONE 02 will also study communication and navigation systems that will be used in NASA&#8217;s planned <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-reveals-new-details-about-artemis-3-astronaut-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-reveals-new-details-about-artemis-3-astronaut-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-reveals-new-details-about-artemis-3-astronaut-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis missions of lunar exploration<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/artemis-moon-base-will-cover-hundreds-of-square-miles-with-hopping-drones-and-new-lunar-rovers-nasa-says\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/artemis-moon-base-will-cover-hundreds-of-square-miles-with-hopping-drones-and-new-lunar-rovers-nasa-says\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/artemis-moon-base-will-cover-hundreds-of-square-miles-with-hopping-drones-and-new-lunar-rovers-nasa-says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon base construction<\/a>. &#8220;This mission represents an important step in the maturation of cislunar capabilities,&#8221; said NASA&#8217;s Sean Fuller, Moon Base CAPSTONE manager, in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/rtmd\/nasa-announces-new-spacecraft-technology-demonstration-mission-at-moon\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/rtmd\/nasa-announces-new-spacecraft-technology-demonstration-mission-at-moon\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">agency statement<\/a>. &#8220;CAPSTONE 02 lays the foundation for lunar infrastructure and commercial services that support Artemis, Moon Base, and future missions to deep space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7631879c-8ce6-11f1-b8fa-2d0f4988a267\">The two CAPSTONE 02 probes are being built by Terran Orbital Systems, Inc. Once in space, they will alternate jobs while flying in formation, switching between what NASA calls &#8220;chaser&#8221; and &#8220;target&#8221; roles.<\/p>\n<p>The spacecraft pair will use celestial navigation, optical sensors and data collected by telescopes on the ground during these maneuvers. This is similar to how NASA will use a variety of data to help its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion spacecraft<\/a> meet up with a lunar lander en route to the moon.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>On the upcoming Artemis III mission, currently scheduled for 2027, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/four-astronauts-3-spacecraft-2-weeks-in-orbit-artemis-iii-will-be-nasas-most-complicated-mission-ever\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/four-astronauts-3-spacecraft-2-weeks-in-orbit-artemis-iii-will-be-nasas-most-complicated-mission-ever\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/four-astronauts-3-spacecraft-2-weeks-in-orbit-artemis-iii-will-be-nasas-most-complicated-mission-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA will test some of these techniques<\/a> as Orion will rendezvous with both <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origin-tests-1st-moon-lander-ahead-of-lunar-launch-later-this-year-photo\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origin-tests-1st-moon-lander-ahead-of-lunar-launch-later-this-year-photo\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origin-tests-1st-moon-lander-ahead-of-lunar-launch-later-this-year-photo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin&#8217;s Blue Moon lander<\/a> and SpaceX&#8217;s Starship, if all goes according to plan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Transporting crew to the lunar surface from cislunar orbit depends on knowing how well navigation systems will perform during these operations. The first CAPSTONE probe <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-capstone-cubesat-moon-launch-success-rocket-lab\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-capstone-cubesat-moon-launch-success-rocket-lab\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-capstone-cubesat-moon-launch-success-rocket-lab\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched in 2022<\/a> and operated for four years before NASA officially concluded its mission in June 2026.<\/p>\n<p>That microwave-oven-sized CAPSTONE spacecraft tested communications tech and became the first spacecraft to test three-body orbits around the moon, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/technology\/space-comms\/nasas-capstone-completes-extended-mission-testing-lunar-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/technology\/space-comms\/nasas-capstone-completes-extended-mission-testing-lunar-technologies\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to a NASA statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>CAPSTONE was tested in what is known as a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-capstone-cubesat-final-orbit-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-capstone-cubesat-final-orbit-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-capstone-cubesat-final-orbit-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">near rectilinear halo orbit<\/a>.
