Earlier in the same year, Dailor also lost his mother. After a very difficult period of grief, the band are touring again (with more shows scheduled from September), and have a new album titled Marrow Deep landing on 28 August.

In a new interview with The Guardian, the pair look back on their somewhat hectic bond with Hinds, and how they found their desire to make more music after such a tumultuous time.

Dailor says, “If any of us did half the stuff that Brent pulled off, we’d all have been dead years ago. We’ve always been a hard-partying band, but for the last 10, 15 years, the three of us really settled down and were focusing more on our live show and being productive in the studio.

“He was still rocking, which was, for a lot of people from the outside looking in, the most admirable thing about him. But from the inside it’s not always that much fun.”

Dailor and Sanders decline to expand any further on why the band parted with Hinds. Their original statement claimed the decision was mutual, but some pretty scathing social media posts from Hinds regarding the other members suggested there were some inner tensions.

The one thing they can confirm? Hinds never punched Dailor in the face; a rumour which broke out after a public appearance he made with a black eye, just before the announcement. In fact, Dailor says Hinds sent him a text amid the media flurry saying he couldn’t believe the rumours.

Further into the interview, the pair reflect more deeply on the loss – not just the pain it caused them, but how it altered their perspective on living life to its fullest.

“I was devastated,” Dailor shares. “All the shit-talking that had happened – you reference the Instagram comment section shit – I didn’t think about any of that. We got 25 years of a deep relationship with this guy. I could tell who he was by the smell of his farts.

“When one of the integral members, one of your brothers, dies, it’s obviously a very painful thing to go through, but it also makes you question where you’re at. Seeing Brent in his casket was so difficult to wrap our heads around, and it makes you want to feel fucking alive. We’re still here, so we better get to it.”

Marrow Deep, the new album from Mastodon, is released on 28 August.
