Hampshire Men are back in action on the road in the One-Day Cup as they face Essex following Sunday’s defeat against Worcestershire Rapids at Visit Worcestershire New Road.<\/p>\n
Hampshire were within touching distance of a momentous win at New Road against the reigning champions of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup. When Oliver Williams was dismissed at 260-9, and Andrew Neal stepped out to the crease, few expected such a mammoth comeback from the tailender. His 48 from 22 balls piled on the pressure for the hosts, but in the final over an edge to the keeper confirmed a defeat for Hampshire by just 4 runs.<\/p>\n
Worcestershire set a target of 308 to win after some strong batting from Henry Cullen and Kashif Ali, adding 72 and 65 to the total respectively. Fateh Singh claimed another three wickets, including the decisive dismissal of Andrew Neal in the final over, to make it two wins in two for Worcestershire Rapids.<\/p>\n
Hampshire defeated Essex by five wickets at Utilita Bowl in their last meeting, with Joe Weatherley stealing the show. He stormed to 116 not out from 105 balls, passing his previous high score of 105 in List A matches, as well as surpassing a total of 1000 runs.<\/p>\n

Player to watch: Tom Westley\u00a0\u2013 the experienced captain enjoyed a purple patch in the competition a year ago with two centuries and 561 runs at an average of 70. Having sat out the Vitality\u00a0T20\u00a0Blast he will be fresh and\u00a0raring\u00a0to go.<\/p>\n
Young gun: Mitchell Killeen \u2013 the 21-year-old seamer has not broken into the first team yet since his move from Durham. But the 50-over competition could provide him with the opening he requires to\u00a0kickstart\u00a0his Essex career.<\/p>\n
Final thought:\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not just a development competition for players. For the second year, Essex\u00a0entrust\u00a0head-coach duties to batting coach Tom Huggins to enhance his education. Last season he oversaw five victories at a time when Essex\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0buy a win.<\/p>\n
