If you look at the way Bruce Springsteen<\/a> sings, you would swear that he\u2019s never had a bad show in his life.\u00a0<\/p>\n The man is one of the sturdiest presences in rock and roll music, and with the help of the E Street Band behind him, he has turned every single venue he has ever played in into a place of worship to the legends of rock and roll\u2019s past. He was always willing to do whatever he could to give people their money\u2019s worth, and that involved him taking a chance even when the rest of the facilities weren\u2019t up to his standards every time he played.<\/p>\n But it\u2019s not like any venue accommodations were going to slow him down by any stretch. Some of his favourite performances came when it was just him, his guitar and a microphone singing and talking through his tunes, and even if the rest of the band wasn\u2019t behind him, it was about creating a sense of atmosphere whenever he performed. And that even included times when people couldn\u2019t hear him.<\/p>\n There have been plenty of stories where Springsteen was playing an unplugged acoustic guitar in the middle of a school gym gig with the rest of his band, and he still sounds like he\u2019s having the time of his life up there. But if you wanted to leave an impression on the audience, you had to have the right songs to get you to the next level, and Springsteen had a bit of a learning curve to do.<\/p>\n The rambling songs from his first record weren\u2019t going to be the same sing-alongs that everyone was used to, and even when Born to Run became a monster hit, counting on people to remember every single piece of a tune like \u2018Jungleland<\/a>\u2019 would have been too much to ask an audience. But around the 1980s, \u2018The Boss\u2019 had a better handle on what a hook was supposed to sound like.<\/p>\n Born in the USA is basically a critique of the American dream that happens to have some of the catchiest melodies of Springsteen\u2019s career on it, but years before that, he was still woodshedding his singles. \u2018Badlands\u2019 is still one of the greatest post-Born hits<\/a> of his career, and while Nebraska was its own unique monster in lots of ways, he wouldn\u2019t have got there without the massive hook in \u2018Hungry Heart\u2019.<\/p>\n The whole thing felt like a callback to the golden age of rock and roll, and while Springsteen was deadset on giving the tune to Ramones to play, it only took one bad gig for him to realise what he had on his hands, saying<\/a>, \u201cIt was a terrible arena that used to be in Chicago. One of the most awful-sounding places I\u2019ve ever been in. It didn\u2019t even sound bad. It wasn\u2019t good enough to sound bad. I figured it was going to be a disaster. But that night, we kicked into \u2018Hungry Heart\u2019 and the entire audience sang along. It\u2019s not exactly a mistake that John Lennon warned Springsteen about the problems that he would be having if he let all of that time go to his head, but Springsteen wasn\u2019t going to forget about the kind of places that he grew up playing in when the venues started to get a little bit bigger than normal.<\/p>\n Because when you really think about it, every Springsteen show is the same thing that he would have been playing at The Stone Pony years ago, except this time the amps are a little bit bigger, and he has a few more friends to work with. And while many people can claim to not like Springsteen for what he stands for, there\u2019s a sense of real community whenever he kicks into \u2018Hungry Heart\u2019 to this day.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
