A survey of dolphins, porpoises and whales is to take place in Channel Island waters.<\/p>\n
The work undertaken on the University of Plymouth’s dedicated survey vessel aims to build a clearer picture of the movements of cetaceans.<\/p>\n
La Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Guernesiaise, the University of Plymouth and Guernsey Ports, which are conducting the survey, said it would complement existing records gathered through public sightings, acoustic monitoring and land-based observations.<\/p>\n
Nicola Harris, secretary of the marine biology section at La Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Guernesiais, said the 10-day survey would help deepen understanding of marine mammals in local waters.<\/p>\n
She said: “Guernsey’s waters support rich and varied biodiversity, but much of our understanding relies very heavily on citizen science and volunteering initiatives.<\/p>\n
“This survey provides a great opportunity to collaborate with academia to collect high-quality data and use the outputs to drive forward effective management and conservation for the long-term health of our waters.”<\/p>\n
