{"id":72348,"date":"2025-08-17T01:33:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T01:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/72348\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T01:33:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T01:33:08","slug":"why-ellis-park-has-failed-to-sell-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/72348\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Ellis Park has failed to sell out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SA Rugby president Rian Oberholzer has confirmed that the union has hit its ticket sales target for the Rugby Championship opener between the Springboks and Wallabies.<\/p>\n<p>The Test match between the double World Cup winners and Australia at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg is not a sell-out but has hit SA Rugby\u2019s benchmark of 85%.<\/p>\n<p>Ellis Park failed to sell out<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/south-africa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Springboks<\/a>\u2018 matches against Italy in Pretoria and Port Elizabeth, as well as the clash versus Georgia in Nelspruit, were reportedly all sell-outs, but the same cannot be said for the meeting with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/australia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wallabies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Much of this is due to the pricing of the tickets, which range from R1,050 to R4,000 (around \u00a344 to \u00a3167) for general entry \u2013 a stark increase from the 2024 prices and one that many South Africans cannot afford.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after SA Rugby took over control of the ticket sales from the hosting franchises and stadiums for the 2025 international season.<\/p>\n<p>While the 62,000-capacity stadium won\u2019t be packed to the rafters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/rian-Oberholzer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oberholzer<\/a> says that their targets have been met.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve hit our targets in terms of budgeting for the event,\u201d SA Rugby\u2019s boss told News24 at the launch of Vodacom\u2019s new telecoms sponsorship deal with the union at Loftus Versfeld on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we did our forecasts, we worked on an 85% capacity. We\u2019re well over that, and after the United Rugby Championship, we\u2019ll review our programme and how we drove it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019ve made any mistakes, we\u2019ll rectify them before the second Test match between the Springboks and Wallabies in Cape Town next week, with the remaining tickets starting at R1 750 (about \u00a374) and rising to as much as R3000.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa have one more home match for 2025 after the meeting with Australia in the Western Cape when they host Argentina at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban in round four of the Rugby Championship.<\/p>\n<p>Their tournament will conclude in Twickenham against Los Pumas, with over 50,000 ticket said to have already been sold for the match in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"px-3
