But, there is one thing that affects your health more than any other factor and, incredibly, you have total control over it, the food that goes into your body.

That being said, if you’re anything like me, you know you should eat more healthfully, but it’s easier said than done. As someone dealing with creeping weight gain and a complicated family health history, I’d tried (and failed) to find success with generic health advice. And with the astronomical amount of nutrition advice out there, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. From fad diets encouraged by the latest influencer-of-the-week to conflicting expert opinions, it’s challenging to know what will work for you. And what works for you may not work for me. Luckily, that’s exactly what’s so great about working with a nutritionist through Fay.

Working one-on-one enables a tailored plan of attack that is fluid based on the individual’s progress. The reality is that most physicians receive minimal nutrition training, averaging only 19 hours across their entire degree program. While a doctor can identify that high cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease, they often lack the time or specialized training to guide your daily eating habits beyond basic advice.

Unlike medical doctors, dietitians and nutritionists are experts in using nutrition as a clinical tool to promote health and manage chronic disease. Whether your goal is to reach a specific weight range or manage a condition like PCOS, diabetes, or food allergies, a personalized plan provides the implementation strategy that a standard check-up usually misses.

This level of personalization is exactly what makes Fay Nutrition an effective solution for those with diverse health requirements.

What’s Holding You Back?

With Fay Nutrition making virtual nutritionist appointments the norm, it makes it that much more accessible for anyone to have work with a Registered Dietitian. – Credit: Unsplash Curated Lifestyle

Even with the clear benefits of professional guidance, many people (myself included) hesitate to book an appointment. Before I started with Fay, several hurdles kept me from taking the leap:

Cost: I assumed a private specialist would be an expensive out-of-pocket cost.

Time: I wasn’t sure how to find someone who could work around my schedule.

Expertise: I needed a nutritionist near me who understood a plant-based diet, rather than someone pushing a generic meal plan.

Overwhelm: I simply didn’t know where to start the search.

Those barriers disappeared once I realized how the platform functions. Signing up takes less than five minutes, and they offer virtual appointments, meaning they adapt to your life rather than the other way around. Most importantly, because Fay Nutrition is covered by over 700 insurance providers, many users pay $0 for their sessions.

What Is Fay Nutrition?

Fay Nutrition is a digital platform designed to connect patients with board-certified registered dietitians who accept insurance. While many wellness apps rely on automated meal tracking or health coaches without certifications, Fay focuses on Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) delivered by clinical professionals.

The platform currently hosts a network of over 2,000 board-certified registered dietitians across the United States. These providers have a variety of specialties, including diabetes management, eating disorders, sports nutrition, and gut health, so you’re always able to find someone to address your specific needs.

Plus, Fay’s direct insurance billing system handles the administrative work of claims, so you can focus on your health goals rather than paperwork.

Is Fay Nutrition Legit?

When considering an online health service, credibility often comes down to clinical standards and financial transparency. Fay Nutrition operates as a legitimate medical service rather than a standard wellness program.

The platform’s legitimacy is supported by three primary factors:

Professional Credentials: Every provider in the network is a board-certified Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). This requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (soon to be a master’s), 1,000+ hours of supervised clinical practice, and passing a national board exam. This process takes upwards of 5-6 years.

Insurance Transparency: Fay is accepted by 700+ insurance plans nationwide. They verify your specific coverage upfront, ensuring that pricing is transparent before you ever book a session.

Professional Validation: The platform is used and recommended by healthcare professionals as a holistic component of ongoing patient care. With over 34,000 five-star Fay Nutrition reviews, the service has been validated by a large user base as a legitimate medical resource.

Features Breakdown

The platform is built around a “high-touch” model of care, combining personalized 1:1 sessions with digital tools for habit maintenance.

1:1 Dietitian Sessions: You can choose between virtual video sessions or in-person visits depending on your location and preference.

Search and Filter Tools: The directory allows you to filter by specific medical specialties (like SIBO, perimenopause, or pediatric nutrition) and location to find a provider that matches your exact history.

The Fay App: The mobile platform includes features for appointment scheduling, direct messaging with your dietitian between sessions, and goal tracking to monitor progress.

Specialized Challenges: Users can participate in structured challenges within the app to stay engaged with their nutrition plan during the week.

Integrated Billing: The system integrates directly with insurance providers to confirm copays and handle billing, reducing the risk of unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

Pros and Cons

ProsConsStrong insurance coverageLimited to registered dietitiansBoard-certified professionals onlyIn-person availability variesProven outcomesInsurance verification step requiredBroad specialization areasUser-friendly platform

Nourish vs. Fay Nutrition: How Do They Compare?

If you’re already convinced that insurance-covered dietitian care is the right path, you might be deciding between Nourish and Fay Nutrition. Both platforms provide access to board-certified professionals, often for a $0 out-of-pocket cost, but they approach the daily experience differently.

Choose Nourish if you want a highly guided, structured experience. The Nourish platform is built around helping users cut through wellness noise with a supported app experience that includes daily goal tracking, curated recipes, and specific condition guides. It feels like a highly supportive “coach” in your pocket.

Choose Fay Nutrition if your priorities are flexibility and specialist depth. Fay offers a streamlined approach to finding experts in niche medical areas, so it may be the better choice if you’re dealing with a specific health concern. Another strength is the efficiency of their insurance handling and the breadth of their specialist network.

In the Nourish vs. Fay Nutrition comparison, the best fit depends on how much structure you require. If you want a daily roadmap, Nourish is a strong contender (you can read our full Nourish review here).

But if you prefer a straightforward path to a specific clinical expert and a flexible schedule, Fay makes a lot of sense. It should be noted that Fay recently added some features to their app that will appeal to those of us who are highly motivated by a more “gamified” experience. If you love checking things off of lists, holding streaks, and earning real-life rewards, you’ll dig this addition. You can now even earn points for attending appointments and checking off daily goals, allowing you to unlock real-life cash to spend on your meals.

My Health Background

A little background on me: I’m a mostly vegan vegetarian. What does that mean? I follow a mostly plant-based diet, but will occasionally eat dairy (like cheese on pizza or cage-free eggs in baked goods). It was important to me to find someone who could help me maximize my nutrition based on my personal needs.

Aside from my vegetarian diet, my main concern was improving my general health. Both of my parents passed away at the age of 61 from preventable diseases. My mother was taken devastatingly quickly by lung cancer about a year before I started working with my Fay RD, and my father had passed away a few years previously due to diabetes complications. They both had poor personal health as well as family histories of health problems, including stroke (my mother had one at 50), heart attacks (most of my aunts and uncles have had open heart surgery), and cancer (multiple kinds). And my dad was on blood pressure meds from the age of 23.

Their deaths were a wake-up call for me. I do consider myself healthier than them, I’ve never smoked, rarely drink, don’t have high blood pressure, and I’m not as overweight as they were. Even so, I know I could do a lot better.

Like my parents, I have a lot of people that love me. I’m a wife, mother, friend, and big-time lover of life. I want to live the longest, healthiest life possible. Not only that, but I want to feel better as I age, not worse. So, you could say I had a few goals going into my first appointment with my Fay nutritionist.

My Personal Experience with a Fay Nutritionist

As a self-professed nutrition nerd (somewhat of a requirement here at Organic Authority), I know a lot about nutrition. Probably more than the average person. But even with all that nutrition knowledge, I’ve never found the discipline to stick to healthy eating. I find planning meals overwhelming.

So when it was proposed that I try Fay, I was at a solid 10 on the enthusiasm scale. Once I did some research, I knew that a dietitian (something that I previously thought was out of reach for me!) was exactly what I needed to take control of my health.

The Sign-up Process

Signing up was seriously easy. And when I say easy, I mean it, it took me around two minutes. I entered my zip code, my insurance information, and filtered for a couple of specialties (vegetarian and perimenopause).

Once I was signed up, I searched through the smiling photos and bios of prospective nutritionists. I landed on Lyla Joffe, RD. Next, I set up our first appointment.

My First Session with a Dietitian

During our first session, my Fay nutritionist and I talked about my current eating habits and my overarching health goals. – Credit: Unsplash Becca Tapert

Before I logged into my first 1.5 hour session, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Part of me thought she was going to grill me on my food choices and maybe gently pass judgment, which would be her total professional right. But that’s not how it went.

We started with quick, friendly introductions, then jumped right into it. She guided me through talking about my goals and my eating habits. There was no judgment or pressure. Honestly, it felt like I was chatting with a friend over coffee, a friend that had the nutrition know-how to help me achieve my goals.

Towards the end of the first session, Lyla offered some eye-opening insights and laid out her plan for me. She told me that she likes to meet weekly for the first 12 weeks. She planned to bake education into my plan, where she’d teach me an aspect of nutrition relevant to me during each session. On my end, I’d be responsible for logging my food in an app to share information with her. Our sessions would include going over what I ate for the week and setting up weekly goals for the next week.

What really blew me away was that within one virtual meeting with Lyla, I felt empowered. I felt like taking control of my health outcomes was possible and that I was finally going to do it.

The Journey So Far

My sessions with my Registered Dietitian from Fay Nutrition have made cooking more enjoyable, I’m even hoping to upgrade my food containers to invest in meal planning. – Credit: Unsplash Diana Light

I’ve been working with a Fay Nutritionist for about a year now, and, not to be dramatic, but I’ve experienced life-changing outcomes.

From the very beginning, my nutritionist made it clear that her goal (our goal!) was not to overhaul everything at once, but instead have a goal or two to focus on at a time.

I’ve never felt as in control over my health as I have this past year. Early on in my journey, I started living a healthier lifestyle with Fay Nutrition.

I now think of preparing healthy food as a gift to myself and my health instead of a chore. I enjoy shopping and planning for these meals. I’ve gotten so into it, I’ve even added some pretty food storage containers to my birthday wish list. And so far, I’ve lost around 15 pounds, which is more about health than anything else for me.

Best of all, I’m never alone in the journey. I love that Lyla asks me questions along the way to involve me in my plan. Unlike a registered dietitian that you might see in person, I’m able to contact her throughout the week with any questions or concerns. And she consistently checks in, cheering me on.

She did tell me that she couldn’t comment on the office hours or boundaries of other practitioners on the Fay Nutrition platform, but she’s been more than happy to answer any question that I have. Knowing she’s a message away keeps me accountable and helps me stay empowered around the clock.

For the first time in a long time, I think of preparing healthy food as a gift to myself and my health instead of a chore.

Overall, working with Fay Nutrition has felt like having a supportive friend, an encouraging cheerleader, and a knowledgeable guide by my side every step of the way. It is never a one-size-fits-all when it comes to health. Working one-on-one enables a tailored plan of attack that is fluid based on the individual’s progress. It also allows for an endless source of feedback and support. Dietitians provide structure, nutritional science and accountability.

Organic Authority: What happens when you meet with a dietitian?

Lyla Joffe, RD: A dietitian will take an in-depth intake of your past weight history, health status and diet. They will then work with you to develop meal plans relevant to your goals. They will teach you how to create a balanced plate and will dispel nutrition myths that may be causing confusion.

Additionally, they will look into your emotional relationship with food and how that may impact your eating behaviors.

Organic Authority: What is the difference between working with a nutritionist and a dietitian?

Lyla Joffe, RD: A dietitian has a required course load and licensing exam as well as continuing education credits to maintain their license. A nutritionist does not necessarily require a degree or a license.

FAQs

Are nutritionists covered by insurance?

Nutrition services are only covered by insurance if the nutritionist is a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). When you book through Fay, you have a guarantee that all providers are board-certified RDs / RDNs and capable of accepting your insurance.

 How much do dietitians cost?

A session with a registered dietitian could cost up to $600. But with Fay Nutrition, you’re able to use insurance, most of people with insurance will pay as little as $0.

Does working with a dietitian help?

Absolutely, working with a dietitian can help. Whether your goal is to eat more healthfully, lose weight, or change your diet due to health issues, a dietitian has the knowledge and skills to guide the way. However, like anything (diet, exercise, etc.), you must meet them halfway. Ultimately, you are in charge of the food that goes into your body.

What happens when you work with a nutritionist?

A nutritionist or registered dietitian will first assess your needs and goals, as well as where you’re at currently.
