{"id":724052,"date":"2026-08-02T07:31:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T07:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/724052\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T07:31:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T07:31:09","slug":"beavers-helping-to-reduce-drought-with-wetlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/724052\/","title":{"rendered":"Beavers helping to reduce drought with wetlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Beavers, often described as &#8220;ecosystem engineers&#8221;, were once widespread in Britain but were hunted to extinction about 400 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 2015, the semi-aquatic mammals were reintroduced to the wild in the River Otter, Devon, and in February this year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn5ggx7xkpyo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four pairs were released to Par and Fowey rivers<\/a> in Cornwall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Puttock said: &#8220;One of the biggest modifications beavers do is build dams\u2026 that creates these really complex wetlands, which for beavers provides them with safety from predators and ability to move around in the landscape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Increasingly, our research has shown this provides benefits to us as people and society, building a more resilient landscape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said when the landscape holds more water, it built resilience for both flooding and dry periods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The slow release of water creates both habitat refuge and water resilience, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Puttock said wetland ponds held about 1,000 cubic metres of water each, reducing peak flows by 30% by retaining it in leaky dams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;One beaver wetland won&#8217;t solve all of our drought problems,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;But overall, as beavers expand in our landscapes, and also as we do other nature-based solutions or wetland creation schemes&#8230; it does mean that we are less prone to droughts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Puttock said when he started researching beavers a decade ago he was not thinking about wildfires but flood management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We&#8217;re famously a wet country but there&#8217;s been a whole raft of really positive research coming out of the States that&#8217;s basically working on the premise that water doesn&#8217;t burn,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;When we can create wetlands and beaver wetlands, it creates resilient landscapes to drought but also to the extremes of drought such as wildfires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Having these wet landscapes can provide that firebreak.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Follow BBC Devon on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bbcspotlight\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">X, external<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DevonBBC\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook, external<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bbcdevon\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram, external<\/a>.
