\n There are a range of household items that you should not throw in the recycling that often catch people out.\n<\/p>\n
What can\u2019t I put in the recycling bin?<\/p>\n
\n Ashley, who is the No. 1 Binman on TikTok, posted a video telling people to never put polystyrene in a recycling bin.\n<\/p>\n
\n He said it can\u2019t be recycled and might mean binmen will leave your rubbish without collecting it.\n<\/p>\n
\n Polystyrene is often used when delivering fragile items, as it fills the gaps inside boxes and helps to prevent goods being damaged.\n<\/p>\n
\n Polystyrene should be removed from cardboard boxes before you put them in the recycling with the polystyrene going into the general waste bin.\n<\/p>\n
\n A few commenters mentioned how they had no idea about this rule with one saying: “I never knew you couldn\u2019t recycle polystyrene.”\n<\/p>\n
\n Another commenter said: “I genuinely thought it could be recycled.”\n<\/p>\n
\n Another user had checked with their local council who said the polystyrene can simply be put in your black bin instead.\n<\/p>\n
What other items can\u2019t I put in the recycling bin?<\/p>\n
\n Ashley has made other videos where he has told people what not to put in their recycling bin.\n<\/p>\n
\n He said you should not be putting plastic carrier bags in your recycling bin but instead, you can take them to a supermarket that has a bin for things like bags.\n<\/p>\n
\n Supermarkets will also collect crisp packets that cannot go into your recycling bin and will mean binmen will refuse to collect your rubbish.\n<\/p>\n
\n Pizza boxes can go into the recycling bin if they do not have a lot of grease on them but if they are particularly greasy, they should go in the general waste bin.\n<\/p>\n
\n Vapes are classed as battery waste and electrical waste, which makes them a hazard when trying to process standard household rubbish and must be disposed of separately.\n<\/p>\n
