As the second half of 2026 approaches, many Britons are already planning their annual leave around the remaining three bank holidays of the year. Since bank holiday dates can vary each year, people are keeping a close eye on the calendar, particularly with Boxing Day, which will not fall on its traditional date of December 26 this year.<\/p>\n

There are currently no plans to introduce any additional UK-wide bank holidays, meaning England and Wales are expected to retain their usual eight public holidays in 2027. Before then, the next bank holiday in England and Wales is the Summer Bank Holiday on Monday, August 31, followed by Christmas Day on Friday, December 25.<\/p>\n

As Boxing Day falls on a Saturday this year, a substitute bank holiday will be observed on Monday, December 28, giving workers an additional day off in lieu of the weekend holiday, the Liverpool Echo<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

In 2027, Christmas Day will land on a Saturday, and Boxing Day will be on a Sunday. This means December 27 and December 28 will be substitute bank holidays.<\/p>\n

Many workers can make the most of the remaining bank holidays by planning annual leave in advance, potentially extending weekends into longer breaks.<\/p>\n

Guidance from the UK Government, states: “If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday. Your employer does not have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays. Bank holidays might affect how and when your benefits are paid.”<\/p>\n
