{"id":725125,"date":"2026-08-02T23:35:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T23:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/725125\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T23:35:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T23:35:15","slug":"fish-in-norwich-river-killed-by-heat-and-drain-water-say-experts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/725125\/","title":{"rendered":"Fish in Norwich river killed by heat and drain water, say experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The River Wensum, which stretches about 44 miles (71km) through Norfolk, is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is believed to be home to more than 100 plant species and rich invertebrate fauna, and is recognised as one of the most important chalk river habitats in England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Environment Agency said its officer &#8220;promptly attended the scene&#8221; and its investigation concluded: &#8220;The most likely cause of the incident was heavy rainfall on Thursday evening flushing contamination from surface water drainage systems into the river.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This has coincided with a period of low river flows and high temperatures, creating conditions that significantly reduced dissolved oxygen levels in the water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It would continue to monitor the river and work with partner organisations, they added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Do you have a story suggestion for Norfolk?
