Spider-Man: Brand New \u2060Day brought in a blockbuster $927m \u2060in worldwide ticket sales to deliver the second most lucrative opening weekend of all time both domestically and globally.<\/p>\n
The movie, which marks actor Tom Holland\u2019s fourth \u2060outing as the web-slinging superhero, depicts Peter Parker fighting crime in a world that has forgotten he is Spider-Man. Zendaya, who is married to Holland, co-stars as MJ, the love of Parker\u2019s life. The film explores Parker\u2019s struggles \u2060with loneliness and his pursuit of human connection.<\/p>\n
Spider-Man: Brand New Day made $355m in the United States and Canada in its opening weekend, making it second-biggest debut in domestic box office history after 2019\u2019s Avengers: Endgame with $357m, not adjusted for inflation.<\/p>\n
Internationally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed $572m, with China leading international markets with $121m in ticket sales, bringing the film\u2019s global opening total to $927m. In Australia it had the biggest opening weekend of 2026, making $30.4m.<\/p>\n
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige called it \u201ca truly phenomenal opening\u201d.<\/p>\n
Marvel Studios now boasts the four largest openings of all time at the global box office (not adjusted for inflation): Avengers: Endgame ($1.22bn), Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($927m), Avengers: Infinity War ($640m) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600m).<\/p>\n
Tom Rothman, \u200cchairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment\u2019s Motion Picture Group, described Spider-Man: Brand New Day as \u201cfundamentally a movie about friendship, about the balm of connection in all \u200bour lives, and that is resonant to audiences of all ages \u200cand all around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Spider-Man is one of the most popular of Marvel\u2019s comic book characters, with a cinematic appeal that endures even as audiences have shown \u200csigns of fatigue with the superhero genre. The latest instalment has been well-received, scoring a 90% rating from critics and 98% approval from movie-goers on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n
Greg Durkin, the founder and CEO of the entertainment research firm Enact Insight, told Reuters that the movie\u2019s central themes of loneliness and isolation, and triumphing over drama, resonated especially with gen Z audiences.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a mental health crisis now with young people in our country \u2014 it\u2019s especially acute for young men right now. There\u2019s a friendship crisis,\u201d Durkin said. \u201cThe pandemic created \u2060a bunch of shock wave effects that we haven\u2019t fully documented, much less addressed. This movie touches on some \u200breally important themes.\u201c<\/p>\n
The performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day \u200bfuels an already-robust summer box office, which has been \u200bbuoyed by such major releases as Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey.<\/p>\n
Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, said on Sunday that the combination of Spider-Man: Brand \u200bNew Day with The \u200cOdyssey created the \u201call-time biggest domestic \u200bweekend\u201d in movie theaters.<\/p>\n
Actors Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal appear in both movies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no better \u200blead-in to this movie than The Odyssey,\u201d Dergarabedian said. \u201cThink of how many people around the world were in movie theaters being exposed to trailers marketing for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.\u201d<\/p>\n
The overall 2026 domestic box office performance remains below pre-pandemic levels. Year-to-date receipts are up 10% from last year, but 16% below 2019, the year before the pandemic struck, according to Rentrak.<\/p>\n
