Andy Serkis is directing and reprising his motion-capture role as Gollum, with Peter Jackson producing alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Warner Bros. has confirmed AI-assisted de-aging for select characters and locked in a December 17, 2027 theatrical release, after shifting the film from its original 2026 window.

Gollum is back on the hunt, and this time Andy Serkis is calling the shots from both sides of the camera. Cameras have been rolling in New Zealand since May, Jamie Dornan has stepped into the ranger boots once worn by Viggo Mortensen, and Ian McKellen is dusting off his staff as Gandalf. Add AI-assisted de-aging that Serkis himself has confirmed, a script co-written under Peter Jackson’s watch, and a release date pushed back a year, and Middle-earth’s next chapter looks anything but a simple retread.

A long-awaited return to Middle-earth

Middle-earth is coming back to the big screen. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the next live-action chapter from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, opens in US theaters on December 17, 2027. The film was originally slotted for December 2026 before the studio pushed it back a full year, giving the production more time to deliver on the franchise’s considerable legacy.

Andy Serkis in front of and behind the camera

Andy Serkis, who originated Gollum through groundbreaking motion-capture work in Peter Jackson’s trilogies, is directing the film while reprising the role. That makes The Hunt for Gollum the first live-action Tolkien film not directed by Jackson, who stays on as producer alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Both are also co-writing the screenplay with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, keeping the creative core of the original films largely intact.

AI de-aging and a new Aragorn

Serkis confirmed to Variety that the production will use AI-assisted de-aging. “There’s a little bit of de-aging for some of the characters and machine learning is part of the process,” he said. Which actors get the digital treatment remains under wraps, though speculation has centered on returning stars, with Elijah Wood among the names circulating.

The full cast was revealed at CinemaCon in 2026, headlined by Jamie Dornan as Strider, the ranger later known as Aragorn, taking over from Viggo Mortensen. Ian McKellen also returns as Gandalf, one of the few confirmed links to the original ensemble.

A hunt set on familiar ground

The story unfolds between the events of The Hobbit trilogy and The Lord of the Rings, running parallel to The Fellowship of the Ring and leading up to the Company’s entry into the Mines of Moria. It follows Strider’s pursuit of Gollum after Gandalf sends the ranger on the trail, filling in a chapter Tolkien readers know mostly through references.

Cameras are already rolling

Principal photography began in May 2026 in New Zealand, the same landscapes that shaped Jackson’s six previous films. Warner Bros. marked the occasion with behind-the-scenes footage showing Serkis back in his motion-capture gear to announce Day 1 of shooting. Serkis has also spoken about his approach to the material, describing the film as carrying a strong psychological story, with a trailer still to come before release.

Andy Serkis is directing and reprising his motion-capture role as Gollum, with Peter Jackson producing alongside Fran Walsh…

[27
96,2839,56,54,55
post-725793","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-entertainment","tag-movies","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
