Second place was going to be just fine for Sigrid Haugset. The Uno-X Mobility rider was active early on stage 3 of the Tour de France Femmes, clearly intent on getting in the breakaway. But when she went solo from a small group with almost 90 km left to race, the Norwegian road champion wasn’t thinking about what would await her more than two hours later at the finish in Poligny.<\/p>\n

With solo chaser and two-time world champion Lotte Kopecky nipping her heels, Haugset briefly accepted the inevitable before improbably pulling clear to achieve a remarkable sweep of accomplishments: a stage win, the overall race lead, and a spot in the history books as the longest successful solo break in Tour Femmes history.<\/p>\n

“When I went it was so many seconds and I thought, ‘Yeah, [Kopecky] will catch me,’ and I thought, ‘Yeah, just drop down to her; second [place] is good’,” Haugset said at the finish before laughing. “I can’t believe she didn’t catch me.”<\/p>\n
