{"id":726758,"date":"2026-08-04T02:18:22","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T02:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/726758\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T02:18:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T02:18:22","slug":"brown-hares-were-captured-boxing-on-blakeney-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/726758\/","title":{"rendered":"Brown hares were captured boxing on Blakeney Point"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The footage from Blakeney Point of the animals &#8216;boxing&#8217; was recorded by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/news\/26239485.5-beautiful-national-trust-sites-norfolk-visit\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Trust trail camera<\/a> used to monitor\u00a0a ringed plover nest\u00a0near a former lifeboat house on the nature reserve.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A small team of rangers is resident during nesting bird season from April 1 to August 31.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A spokesman from the Broads and Sheringham National Trust said: \u201cBrown hares are a common sight in fields throughout north Norfolk.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt\u2019s less common to see them this close to the shoreline, but not unheard of.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;When walking along the coast, visitors can help by paying close attention to where they are walking\u00a0as nests can be hard to spot and eggs often blend in with the shingle or sand.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The dramatic \u201cboxing\u201d behaviour is most often seen from March through July, when males can be a little too persistent in pursuing females.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\" alt=\"Boxing Hares in North Norfolk\"\/>Boxing hares in North Norfolk (Image: National Trust)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The spokesman added: \u201cThe boxing usually occurs when a male,\u00a0buck, is being too persistent with a female,\u00a0doe.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;When she\u2019s had enough of his advances, the doe will try to fend him off and that\u2019s when you see the brown hares standing up on their hind legs in this boxing-like stance.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The clip also shows a ringed plover reacting as the hares come close to its nest. \u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Visitors are urged to stick to paths, avoid fenced-off areas and keep dogs away from nesting zones to ensure Norfolk\u2019s hares and shorebirds can continue to put on a show undisturbed.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Some of the best places to spot brown hare in Norfolk include Gramborough Hill, Warham Marsh, Cley Marshes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/news\/25901745.national-trusts-new-vision-morston-quay-norfolk\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">surrounding arable fields<\/a>, Martham Broad and nearby Broads marshes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The footage from Blakeney Point of the animals &#8216;boxing&#8217; was recorded by a National Trust trail camera used&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":726759,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[90,56,54,55,4407],"class_list":["post-726758","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-wildlife"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/726758","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=726758"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/726758\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/726759"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=726758"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=726758"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=726758"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
