Alexandra Eala became the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour-level \u200bsingles \u200btitle, while Taylor \u200bFritz claimed his first trophy of the \u2060season, after both rain-delayed Washington Open finals were completed \u2060on Monday.<\/p>\n

Eala<\/a> stunned top seed Jessica Pegula \u200b4-6, 6-4, 6-0 after the weather-hit women’s final resumed with the 21-year-old trailing by a set \u2060but leading 2-1 in the second, while third seed Fritz beat Spanish teenager Rafa Jodar 7-6, 6-4 in a tight men’s decider.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel so much love. My first chance at a title \u2060knowing it won’t be the last and already having achieved this milestone for my \u200bcareer,\u201d \u2060Eala said on court. \u201cI knew \u200cwhatever happened after this match would have already been a win for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pegula, chasing a \u200bthird Washington title after lifting the trophy in 2019 and 2021, was unable to stop the momentum swinging decisively in Eala’s favour.<\/p>\n

The Filipina<\/a> won 10 of the 13 games played after the restart, securing the second set before racing through the decider behind a dominant left-handed serve and fearless baseline hitting that drew increasingly vocal support from a partisan crowd despite Pegula playing on home soil.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to congratulate Alex on an amazing tournament,\u201d world number three Pegula said. \u201cTo see how far you’ve come over the last couple of years when we first played, to see the amazing fans that follow you every place you go, it’s not fun to play against but I think it’s amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The victory extended \u200bEala’s winning streak against top-10 opponents<\/a> to five matches following \u200cvictories over Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, \u2060twice, and Iga Swiatek.<\/p>\n

The breakthrough title will \u200bpropel Eala to a career-high world number 20 when the new WTA \u200brankings are released.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the beginning of the week, there is no way I would have thought that I would be holding this trophy \u2026 These things kind of creep up on you, and I hold these moments really close to me,\u201d added Eala.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The draw] was a very steep hill,\u201d she continued. \u201cComing into the tournament, I knew that the competition was super strong and my draw was quite tough. Every match was just a different set of obstacles. So I’m really, really proud. I think I encountered my fair share of obstacles this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I ended the tournament in better shape than I started. I think each match I kept improving and kept learning things about myself. So definitely gives me a lot of confidence, and it’s just really nice to see all the things that I have been working on off court or during training being implemented in matches.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fritz, meanwhile, captured his first title of the year after edging 19-year-old Jodar in a \u2060contest delayed overnight by the same rain that interrupted the women’s championship.<\/p>\n

Neither player dropped \u2060serve in the opening set before the American dominated the tiebreak, then broke early in the second and held firm despite late pressure from the Spaniard.<\/p>\n
