\n\tPete Davidson<\/a> is reflecting on the time he was in \u201ctrouble\u201d with NBCUniversal<\/a> over the cancellation of his semi-autobiographical dramedy Bupkis<\/a> on Peacock<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a sprawling interview conducted recently with The Breakfast Club<\/a>, the Saturday Night Live alum candidly discussed everything from his sobriety to the tabloid fixation on his personal life<\/a>. He also touched on his choice to end Bupkis after one season<\/a> last year, which he said at the time was informed by wanting \u201ca chance to tell my story my way\u201d after having \u201cnearly a decade of my personal life being in the media.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI canceled Bupkis and I got in trouble for it \u2019cause I didn\u2019t\u2014 I love that show, I loved doing Bupkis, I had a blast, thank you [host Charlamagne tha God] for being in it,\u201d he began. \u201cIt just got to a point where I got really tired of my whole career just being my personal life, and living through that is sort of traumatic \u2014 not to be lame \u2014 but it\u2019s traumatic to live in your own crap all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite writing storylines in the series that he was \u201ccomfortable\u201d with, Davidson said the show\u2019s direction took a turn once a new collaborator stepped in.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Pickup star explained, \u201cThis new person came and was like: \u2018I think Pete should be banging Martha Stewart this season, I think Pete should have more mental issues.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Oh, but I wouldn\u2019t do that.\u2019 And they were like, \u2018Well, Pete the character [would].\u2019 And I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t do this.\u2019 I was like, if I want any shot in being in real movies or being seen a certain way, I can\u2019t just play myself all the time and be this sack.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to how parent company NBCUniversal took the news, Davidson said: \u201cThey were not pleased. Have you seen me in any NBCUniversal [project since]? They were upset. I cost people jobs and I took care of the writers\u2019 room and anyone who didn\u2019t get paid that needed to, I took care of it \u2014 which also hurt. But, it\u2019s funny, you work for a company for over a decade \u2014 I\u2019m pretty sure I brought in a lot of money, worked hard on that show, was a good boy, like promoting [it] and whatnot. It made me realize a lot about the business, like hey, I\u2019m probably gonna die if I have to keep doing this and that\u2019s a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the Bodies, Bodies, Bodies actor called himself \u201cvery lucky\u201d to enjoy success in the entertainment industry, he added that it \u201cdid kind of open my eyes where it\u2019s just like, \u2018Oh, no one actually cares about you.\u2019 Studios, networks \u2014 they don\u2019t really care about you. They want you to do the thing, which I get. Now it\u2019s all good, but there was a time where it wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked if he was \u201cblacklisted\u201d by NBC over the decision, he said, \u201cNo, I think we\u2019re cool. I talk to everyone over there now and we\u2019re cool. There was a little time where there was some heat and it wasn\u2019t all good \u2026 and I understand why, but it just hurt because it was a place I worked for over a decade,\u201d adding that there was a time he thought it \u201cmight be a wrap\u201d on his career.<\/p>\n

\n\tAdmitting he \u201chad to step back and be in purgatory for a little bit,\u201d Davidson also credited his ad with clothing brand Reformation in helping him \u201cstart to switch the narrative\u201d and be seen as an \u201cadult\u201d in the public eye.<\/p>\n
