Not only was this figure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/forget-10000-steps-a-day-this-is-the-number-you-should-focus-on-instead_uk_662f5bcde4b0eb5fda50ab92\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"a marketing tool\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"662f5bcde4b0eb5fda50ab92\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a marketing tool<\/a> at first, however, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/best-step-count-a-day-health-study_uk_6881f026e4b0cde1a1cc29a0\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"some research has found that the true sweet spot is around 7,000 steps daily\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"6881f026e4b0cde1a1cc29a0\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some research has found that the true sweet spot is around 7,000 steps daily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That distance has been linked to a lower likelihood of all-cause mortality, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even dementia.<\/p>\n<p>Other studies have found different, and generally positive, results for other step counts, too. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/managing-the-risk-of-dementia\/reduce-your-risk-of-dementia\/physical-activity\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Alzheimer\u2019s Society\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/managing-the-risk-of-dementia\/reduce-your-risk-of-dementia\/physical-activity\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alzheimer\u2019s Society<\/a> has said that people who remain physically active throughout their lives may be 20% less likely to develop dementia overall. A lack of exercise, they wrote, is \u201cone of the main factors where the evidence is strong enough to show that it increases a person\u2019s risk of developing dementia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>That comes from a swell of studies that showed a link between moving more and experiencing less dementia (these only showed a link and not a cause, however). <\/p>\n<p>Here are the dementia risk changes associated with different step counts: <\/p>\n<p>1) 3,800 steps a day is linked to a roughly 25% lower dementia risk<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2795819\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"2022 JAMA Neurology paper\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2795819\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2022 JAMA Neurology paper<\/a>, researchers found that walking 3,800 steps a day was linked to 50% of the best dementia-risk-dowering result.<\/p>\n<p>That meant that even though it wasn\u2019t the optimal distance, the figure \u2013 which translates to about 2.85km \u2013 was still associated with a 25% lower likelihood of going on to develop the condition.<\/p>\n<p>2) 5,000-7,500 steps a day is linked to slower cognitive decline and as much as 38% lower dementia risk<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-025-03955-6\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"2025 paper\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-025-03955-6\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2025 paper<\/a> split almost 300 participants into two groups: one with higher levels of amyloid-beta plaques in their brain, and another without. The people involved were aged between 50 and 90, and were followed for nin years.<\/p>\n<p>Amyloid plaques are <a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/insights\/2025\/09\/rethinking-alzheimers-tau-protein.html\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"sticky bundles of abnormal protein\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/insights\/2025\/09\/rethinking-alzheimers-tau-protein.html\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sticky bundles of abnormal protein<\/a> fragments, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/blog\/what-tau-and-what-role-does-it-play-dementia\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"tau tangles \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/blog\/what-tau-and-what-role-does-it-play-dementia\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tau tangles <\/a>are made up of<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2023\/how-tau-tangles-form-brain-0714\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\" stringy proteins\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2023\/how-tau-tangles-form-brain-0714\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> stringy proteins<\/a>. Combined, this pair has <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24493463\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"been compared \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24493463\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">been compared <\/a>to the \u201ctrigger and bullet\u201d in dementia formation; therefore, those in the higher amyloid group were expected to see higher dementia rates, faster.<\/p>\n<p>After tracking participants\u2019 daily step counts and comparing them to dementia incidence rates, the results suggested that the slowing of cognitive decline among those already more likely to develop dementia \u201cplateaued\u201d at a \u201cmoderate\u201d level of activity (5,000-7,500 steps a day).<\/p>\n<p>And the 7,000 steps study we mentioned earlier also found that among all of its healthy participants, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/best-step-count-a-day-health-study_uk_6881f026e4b0cde1a1cc29a0\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"the distance was linked to a 38% lower risk of dementia\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"6881f026e4b0cde1a1cc29a0\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the distance was linked to a 38% lower risk of dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3) 9,800 steps is linked to up to 50% lower dementia risk<\/p>\n<p>Still, to some extent, more does seem to be better. <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2795819\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"The JAMA Neurology research\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2795819\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The JAMA Neurology research<\/a> found that \u201caccumulating more steps per day just under the popular threshold of 10,000 steps per day&#8230; may be associated with lower risk of dementia onset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walking 9,800 steps daily was linked to a roughly 50% lower risk of dementia in this study. <\/p>\n<p>Walk briskly for the best benefits <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just how far you walk \u2013 the speed of your stroll might matter too. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2795819\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"The JAMA paper said\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2795819\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The JAMA paper said<\/a> \u201cperforming steps at higher intensity may be associated with lower risk of dementia\u201d; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/managing-the-risk-of-dementia\/reduce-your-risk-of-dementia\/physical-activity\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Alzheimer\u2019s Society\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/managing-the-risk-of-dementia\/reduce-your-risk-of-dementia\/physical-activity\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"12\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alzheimer\u2019s Society<\/a> named \u201cbrisk\u201d walks in their list of suitable exercises. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5233912\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"2016 research\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5233912\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"13\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2016 research<\/a> found that \u201cslow or decreased walking pace is significantly associated with elevated risk of cognitive decline and dementia in elderly populations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Brisk walking has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajpmonline.org\/article\/S0749-3797(25)00230-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"also been linked to\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.ajpmonline.org\/article\/S0749-3797(25)00230-2\/fulltext\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">also been linked to<\/a> a 20% reduction in premature death compared to 4% for slower walkers.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemediacentre.org\/expert-reaction-to-study-on-physical-activity-number-of-steps-and-alzheimers-disease-related-decline\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Science Media Centre \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a72ea7ee4b02974827bc6ab\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemediacentre.org\/expert-reaction-to-study-on-physical-activity-number-of-steps-and-alzheimers-disease-related-decline\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Science Media Centre <\/a>about the 2025 paper we discussed above, Professor Andrew Doig, a Professor in Biochemistry at the University of Manchester, said: \u201cWhile the exact mechanism that links exercise to dementia is uncertain, this work convincingly shows that a straightforward way to slow down the progression of [Alzheimer\u2019s] is to take exercise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis does not have to be onerous.
