{"id":729567,"date":"2026-08-06T17:48:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T17:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/729567\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T17:48:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T17:48:17","slug":"irish-unemployment-rate-rises-to-5-1-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/729567\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish unemployment rate rises to 5.1% \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Unemployment in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\">State<\/a> edged up to 5.1 per cent in July amid signs the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/work\/\">labour<\/a> market may be slowing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Central Statistics Office\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\">CSO<\/a>) measure of joblessness rose from 5 per cent to 5.1 per cent between June and July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The seasonally adjusted number of people classified as being unemployed was 149,900 in July, compared with 147,100 in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest snapshot comes amid warnings that the labour market in the Republic  is cooling after several years of significant growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The headline rate is still anchored at 5 per cent, however, which is low historically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2026\/06\/05\/gdp-contracting-12-not-a-concern-but-keep-an-eye-on-unemployment\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Don\u2019t worry about a 12% fall in GDP, but watch unemployment closelyOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe recent uptick in unemployment reflects a recalibration of Ireland\u2019s labour market, rather than a cause for concern,\u201d said Kate English, chief economist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/deloitte\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/deloitte\/\">Deloitte<\/a> Ireland<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEven though Ireland\u2019s unemployment rate has risen slightly so far this year, the context is important. Ireland has been operating in an exceptionally tight labour market since 2022, with effectively full employment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cToday\u2019s data shows we\u2019re still close to full employment and is reflective of positive labour market dynamics. Ireland\u2019s labour market is still performing above historical and international levels.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CSO said there was a rise of 2,600 in the seasonally adjusted number of people unemployed in July when compared with July 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The seasonally adjusted number of unemployed males was 75,600 in July, while the number of unemployed women was 74,300.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The youth unemployment rate was 12.3 per cent, up from a revised rate of 11.8 per cent the previous month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Commenting on the figures, Jack Kennedy, senior economist at hiring platform Indeed, said: \u201cThe newly revised figures will prompt increased concerns in relation to the trajectory of the country\u2019s unemployment rate, which has edged upwards from an average of 4.7 per cent in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhile the direction of travel is potentially worrying if sustained, it should, however, be remembered that the recent increases have been both limited and gradual.
