Being part of a billion-dollar blockbuster is usually an absolute victory for everyone involved, but Jude Law<\/a> still didn\u2019t feel satisfied with his work.<\/p>\n

The era in which being in a comic book movie is something to be looked down upon is absolutely over, as Marvel Studios has convinced some of the greatest actors<\/a> of all-time to take part in its big-budget superhero spectaculars.<\/p>\n

Although there has recently been some pushback<\/a> against Marvel in light of a few notable misfires, the franchise had nothing but enthusiasm behind it in the lead-up to 2019\u2019s Avengers: Endgame, and, as the film that directly preceded it, Captain Marvel had a lot riding on it.<\/p>\n

Given that Larson was already an Academy Award winner by the time that she signed on as Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel required a deep bench of actors to rise to her level; among her co-stars were Annette Bening, Lee Pace, Samuel L. Jackson, and Law in the role of Yon-Rogg, her character\u2019s mentor.<\/p>\n

Initially presented as a mentor\/father figure archetype, it\u2019s later revealed that he\u2019s been sabotaging her all along in a quest for power, which is another archetype in itself. Law\u2019s performance in the film is solid, but Captain Marvel has some of the weakest writing out of any Marvel movie, which the actor seemed to take as a personal error<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a really good experience,\u201d he offered. \u201cI wish I\u2019d been allowed to have a bit more fun with the part. I wanted him to be more arch. I wanted to lean into the humour more.\u201d Beyond wanting to have more personality in the role, Law felt overwhelmed by the filmmaking process, which required extensive greenscreen and laborious costumes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose suits are hard to move in because they\u2019re thick rubber,\u201d Law said. \u201cYou go to stunt camp for a couple of months, where you\u2019re doing all these fight rehearsals and learning to do all this stuff, and then you put the suit on, and you go, \u2018Oh! I can\u2019t touch my toes! How am I going to do all that stuff with this thing on?\u2019 You figure it out though.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not only was he not allowed to play the role in the way he wanted, but he had to play the role in the way he was told by his corporate overlords, while being incredibly uncomfortable in his big rubber suit, all while pretending to act against things that didn\u2019t exist until they were added in post-production. The door is always open for anyone to return to Marvel, but Law hasn\u2019t been spotted since.<\/p>\n

It seems like an agreement that suits both parties; he had his chance, and he doesn\u2019t think he made the most of it, and since he wasn\u2019t invited back for Larson\u2019s solo sequel, The Marvels, which bombed horrendously at the box office to make a third chapter a non-starter, he likely won\u2019t be back again<\/a>, either.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
