{"id":730699,"date":"2026-08-07T18:54:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T18:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/730699\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T18:54:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T18:54:11","slug":"engineers-race-to-save-stricken-link-rescue-spacecraft-before-its-too-late","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/730699\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineers race to save stricken LINK rescue spacecraft before it&#8217;s too late"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-852b5362-91f1-11f1-bf6c-8953dacd6a6c\">A private rescue spacecraft is having troubles of its own in Earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>LINK, a satellite built and operated by the Arizona company Katalyst Space Technologies, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-successfully-launches-rescue-mission-to-save-swift-space-telescope-from-burning-up-in-earths-atmosphere\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-successfully-launches-rescue-mission-to-save-swift-space-telescope-from-burning-up-in-earths-atmosphere\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-successfully-launches-rescue-mission-to-save-swift-space-telescope-from-burning-up-in-earths-atmosphere\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched July 3<\/a> on a daring and unprecedented mission: Rendezvous with NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41328-swift-observatory.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41328-swift-observatory.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41328-swift-observatory.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Swift space telescope<\/a> and boost the observatory to a higher orbit before it falls out of the sky.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-852b5362-91f1-11f1-bf6c-8953dacd6a6c-2\">About three weeks after launch, however, LINK started <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-launched-this-spacecraft-to-save-a-satellite-now-it-needs-saving-too\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-launched-this-spacecraft-to-save-a-satellite-now-it-needs-saving-too\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-launched-this-spacecraft-to-save-a-satellite-now-it-needs-saving-too\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spinning at an unexpected rate<\/a>, a problem that caused a temporary communications dropout and a reset of its satellite platform. And two of LINK&#8217;s three orientation-controlling reaction wheels stopped working.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-852b5524-91f1-11f1-b5ae-b9d984e3516c\">Spacecraft operators always work hard to fix such problems when they crop up, but there&#8217;s a special urgency where LINK is concerned. It needs to reach Swift soon, or atmospheric drag will pull the observatory \u2014 which possesses no thrusters of its own \u2014 down past a point of no return. NASA thinks this boundary lies at around 186 miles (300 kilometers) above <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>, an altitude that Swift is expected to reach by October.<\/p>\n<p>So the original plan called for LINK to meet up with Swift in early August, just a month after launch \u2014 pretty much as soon as commissioning work on the rescue craft wrapped up. That&#8217;s not going to happen at this point, but mission teams haven&#8217;t given up on the rescue attempt. Indeed, they&#8217;re making progress on getting LINK back up to speed, as a new update relates.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;LINK originally was in a multi-axis spin rotating at about 9 degrees per second, which resulted in sporadic communications and impeded LINK\u2019s progress toward Swift,&#8221; NASA officials wrote in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/swift\/2026\/08\/06\/link-spacecraft-recovery-progressing-for-nasas-swift-boost\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/swift\/2026\/08\/06\/link-spacecraft-recovery-progressing-for-nasas-swift-boost\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the update<\/a>, which the agency posted on Thursday (Aug. 6).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Using a series of burns from one of LINK\u2019s electric propulsion thrusters, the Katalyst team now has slowed that spin to about 1.47 degrees per second,&#8221; they added. &#8220;Katalyst plans to keep LINK at that spin rate as it proceeds with next steps for the mission.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Those next steps include uploading flight software updates &#8220;with new attitude controllers designed to maintain LINK\u2019s stability in its current configuration,&#8221; NASA officials wrote. &#8220;These updates would allow LINK to begin maneuvering to align with Swift\u2019s orbit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The updates are expected to be beamed up to LINK &#8220;in the coming days,&#8221; according to the update.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/nQP6hUzHRW6qJepnHZ2dRc.jpg\" alt=\"a three-panel illustration showing two spacecraft meeting up above earth\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/nQP6hUzHRW6qJepnHZ2dRc.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/nQP6hUzHRW6qJepnHZ2dRc.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Artist&#8217;s illustration of Katalyst Space Technologies&#8217; Link servicing spacecraft approaching and capturing NASA&#8217;s Swift space observatory on an orbit-boosting mission. (Image credit: Katalyst Space Technologies)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-852b5600-91f1-11f1-b86b-e58896b55e08\">Swift \u2014 officially known as the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, launched in 2004 to study <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gamma-ray-burst.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gamma-ray-burst.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gamma-ray-burst.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gamma-ray bursts<\/a>, the most energetic events in the universe.<\/p>\n<p>The $250 million telescope&#8217;s initial altitude was about 375 miles (600 km). But it has fallen considerably since then, and the descent is accelerating: The lower Swift goes, the more atmosphere it encounters and the greater the force of frictional drag becomes.<\/p>\n<p>Swift is still working just fine, which explains why NASA wants to save it. Last September, the agency awarded Katalyst $30 million to build LINK \u2014 a refrigerator-sized spacecraft with three robotic arms \u2014 and fly its rescue mission.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a very tight timeline, but Katalyst hit it, getting LINK ready by its launch date and checking off a number of commissioning milestones before running into trouble. The company has experience delivering under pressure, so maybe it can pull off the rescue craft&#8217;s rescue before it&#8217;s too late.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A private rescue spacecraft is having troubles of its own in Earth orbit.
