{"id":730758,"date":"2026-08-07T20:12:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/730758\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:12:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:12:19","slug":"new-birmingham-gallery-exhibition-celebrates-caribbean-pioneers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/730758\/","title":{"rendered":"New Birmingham gallery exhibition celebrates Caribbean pioneers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c3w4q1ee1p4o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Windrush generation<\/a>, Pathfinders were often the first in their family or community to leave home, cross the Atlantic, and begin a new life in Britain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Many travelled alone, finding work, securing housing and sending photographs back to family in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Adassa Reid, 92, moved to England in 1961, when she was aged 27.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I wanted to come to England, you know for a better life,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We flew to London and took the train to Birmingham Snow Hill train station.
