Metro Bank One-Day Cup \u2013 Men: Notts Outlaws 261-4 beat Northamptonshire Steelbacks 259-8 by six wickets.<\/p>\n

After back-to-back away defeats, Notts Outlaws revived their bid to reach the knock-out stage of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with a six-wicket home-from-home victory over Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Chesterfield.<\/p>\n

To ease pressure on the heavily-used square at Trent Bridge, Notts \u2018borrowed\u2019 the Queen\u2019s Park ground from neighbours Derbyshire for this fixture and it proved a lucky move, Freddie McCann making a List A career-best 91, Haseeb Hameed 51 and Lyndon James 45 not out as Notts overhauled the Steelbacks\u2019 259 for eight with 20 balls to spare.<\/p>\n

The result takes the Outlaws to 16 points with two matches left but leaves the Steelbacks, for whom George Bartlett made 55, Luke Procter 53 and Nathan McSweeney 49, on a meagre return of eight from six matches.<\/p>\n

As the visitors opted to bat first, Procter reeled off a string of early boundaries before Gus Miller nicked behind. Sam King, making his Steelbacks debut against his former county, off-drove James Hayes handsomely for four but was soon leg before to Lyndon James.<\/p>\n

McSweeney took four boundaries in an over as Hayes struggled with his line and Procter hammered Farhan Ahmed for six towards the pavilion at the densely tree-lined ground. But the off-spinner had revenge as the veteran opener was leg before attempting a reverse sweep.<\/p>\n

He and McSweeney added 74, giving Northants a platform at 127 for three from 25 overs.<\/p>\n

Their progress was checked when McSweeney lost his middle stump to Ben Martindale\u2019s medium pace and Stuart van der Merwe\u2019s, swinging ambitiously at McCann\u2019s off spin, surrendered an easy stumping.<\/p>\n

But Bartlett, who reached from 49 balls when he cleared the legside boundary off James, added another 70 in a dozen overs with Rob Keogh (33) before both picked out McCann at long-off. Martindale held a fine boundary catch to remove Lewis McManus as Hayes and Farhan Ahmed finished with two wickets each.<\/p>\n

Needing just over five an over, the Outlaws raced to 62 for two from 10. A confident Martindale struck three boundaries in a row off Raphy Weatherall but was caught behind reaching for one from Liam Guthrie, the left-arm quick, who bowled Tayyab Tahir and had Haseeb Hameed dropped at slip on nought.<\/p>\n

McCann, already imposing himself, cut and drove profitably, going to fifty in as many balls. Northamptonshire looked to their spinners to get a grip but the left-hander reverse-swept Yuzi Chahal for six and took four off Keogh with the same shot. At 143 for two from 25, the job was more than half done.<\/p>\n

Hameed made the Steelbacks pay heavily for the drop, reaching 50 from 70 balls but had added only a single before spooning Chahal to midwicket, the third wicket having put on 101.<\/p>\n

McCann passed his previous best of 70 in List A cricket and moved into the 90s with his 11th four but could make no further progress, undone leg before attempting another reverse as Chahal grabbed his second.<\/p>\n

Yet the fifth-wicket pair of James and Kyle Verreynne were on the front foot throughout in adding 69 in 69 balls, James hitting the winning boundary.<\/p>\n

Notts Outlaws\u2019 top scorer Freddie McCann said:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a nice wicket to bat on and \u00a0Marts (Ben Martindale) set the tone for the powerplay with those early boundaries. I was disappointed not to be there at the end and win the game with Kyle, but I thought the way he and Lyndon played, needing 50 or 60, was exceptional. It shows the calibre of players they both are.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought the way we bowled in those middle periods really restricted them. We were just trying to squeeze them as much as possible with a lot of dot balls. So we were pretty happy with that, we thought that their score was maybe 20 under par. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a bit different, playing a home game here, but Slats (Ben Slater) and Marts know it well from club cricket and there is a nice vibe. It was good obviously to get a win on the board now going into two crucial games to finish. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut I feel as a team we’re really confident. We\u2019s had a few injuries but it shows the depth of the squad we\u2019ve got, with guys like Marts coming in and getting his first hundred last week. He\u2019s been one of our best batters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glen Chapple, the Steelbacks\u2019 senior assistant coach, said: <\/p>\n

\u201cI think we fought well in the middle with both bat and bowl, but in both disciplines we probably didn’t start well enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were a bit slow early on with the bat, we didn’t really get on top of the bowlers. We maybe let them bowl and they bowled pretty well. The pitch wasn’t flat, so it was quite difficult batting first to understand what a good score was. You might think the pitch is a fairly low-scoring pitch, \u00a0but with the outfield so fast, as soon as you do start scoring, the runs come freely. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe think we were probably 30 light, which would have put them under more pressure. There’s some good stuff, but as always when you lose a game, there’s plenty to work on.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter what was an excellent performance in our last game, we would have wanted more of the same. We’ve played some decent cricket, they’ve got good players, and everyone’s fighting to try and get qualification.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glamorgan vs Essex, Group B, Metro Bank One Day Cup<\/a><\/p>\n

Luc Benkenstein’s sparkling 140 from 109 deliveries, his maiden List A century, proved just enough as Essex edged Glamorgan by three runs in a thrilling Metro Bank One-Day Cup encounter at Sophia Gardens.<\/p>\n

In a match that swung wildly, Timm van der Gugten’s career-best unbeaten 118 carried Glamorgan from 78 for five to the brink of an improbable victory before Essex seamer Mackenzie Jones held his nerve to defend six runs from the final over and seal a dramatic win.<\/p>\n

The victory kept Essex’s quarter-final hopes alive while condemning Glamorgan’s youthful side to a sixth successive defeat in the competition.<\/p>\n

Having been asked to bat, Essex’s pair of 21-year-old openers, Benkenstein and the prolific Noah Thain, the competition’s leading run-scorer with 476 runs, dominated the opening exchanges, bringing up their century stand in the 17th over before advancing to 166 without loss by the halfway stage of the innings.<\/p>\n

Thain passed 50 for the fifth time in six innings before slapping Dan Douthwaite to Andy Gorvin at cover for a fluent 76 from 81 deliveries shortly after the drinks break. Benkenstein, unruffled by the loss of his opening partner, completed a superb century from just 94 balls before opening his shoulders on his way to a career-best 140 from 109 balls including seven maximums.<\/p>\n

At 257 for two midway through the 37th over the visitors looked set for an imposing total well in advance of 350.<\/p>\n

Glamorgan, however, hit back impressively, with Essex losing their final eight wickets for 55 runs. The turning point came when Zain ul Hassan’s outstanding direct hit from backward point ran out Critchley for a breezy 28 from 23 balls. Benkenstein followed in the next over, dragging Douthwaite (3 for 57) to van der Gugten at mid-off. Glamorgan continued to apply the pressure, eventually restricting Essex to 312 \u2013 a total significantly below what had earlier seemed likely.<\/p>\n

Glamorgan looked beaten after slumping to 78 for five in reply, with only 17-year-old Harry Wallace (39) offering any top-order resistance against Essex’s seam attack before Alex Horton and Timm van der Gugten transformed the contest with a sixth-wicket partnership of 128. Horton counter-attacked belligerently, striking 85 from 72 deliveries with eight fours and four sixes, while van der Gugten provided the perfect foil before taking centre stage himself.<\/p>\n

When Horton departed to a smart low catch by Charlie Bennett at backward point off the impressive Shane Snater (3 for 49), Glamorgan were 206 for 6 and slipped further when Dan Douthwaite fell to Jones (2 for 47), leaving the hosts 245 for 7 and Essex firmly in control.<\/p>\n

But van der Gugten, supported by skipper Andy Gorvin, refused to surrender, repeatedly finding the boundary with powerful pulls and cuts. The Dutch international completed his maiden List A century before launching Snater straight back over his head for six from the final ball of the penultimate over, leaving Glamorgan needing just six from the last over for a remarkable victory.<\/p>\n

Jones, however, produced an outstanding finish. The 21-year-old Scotland international began with three dot balls to Gorvin before a scrambled single brought van der Gugten back on strike needing five from the final two deliveries. A swing and a miss was followed by a perfectly executed yorker that could only be squeezed for a single, leaving van der Gugten agonisingly unbeaten on a magnificent 118 from 101 balls as Essex closed out a nailbiting three-run victory.<\/p>\n

Essex batter Luc Benkenstein said:<\/p>\n

“Who said 50 over cricket is dead? It was an unbelievable game, I thought Timm was going to get them over the line there but it was unbelievable from Mack in that last over and I’m super chuffed for him.<\/p>\n

“It’s nice to have Noah at the other end, 450 plus runs in six games, it makes things easier. We tried to stay positive early on, nice to get the runs and to contribute to a win.<\/p>\n

“I told myself not to over-hit but to stay positive when they missed their areas, hopefully I can continue in the next few games.<\/p>\n

“We need to win our last two, maybe some other results to go our way, and hopefully creep into the next round.”<\/p>\n

Glamorgan’s allrounder Timm van der Gugten said:<\/p>\n

“With the ball we didn’t start very well, they batted well and we did really well to restrict them.<\/p>\n

“it was nice to build a partnership with ‘Horts’ (Alex Horton) and I thought we got it right until the end, but then their last bowler (Jones) bowled a pretty phenomenal over.<\/p>\n

“If you got in, it was difficult to stop the runs, the wicket had decent pace and the outfield was very quick, so even if you needed 12 an over off the last five you felt you were in the game.<\/p>\n

“It’s bitter-sweet, I work really hard on my batting and (getting a hundred) is something I really wanted to do but it would have been nice to do it in a winning side.”<\/p>\n

Lancashire gave their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup a significant boost when they defeated Gloucestershire by four wickets at Emirates Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

Having restricted the visitors to 270, in which Cameron Bancroft made 98, the home side were in trouble on 183 for six against a predominantly youthful attack.<\/p>\n

But skipper George Balderson and Arav Shetty put on an unbroken 90 off 62 balls to clinch a vital win with 11 balls to spare. Balderson finished 56 not out Shetty was unbeaten on 36\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bancroft\u2019s innings early in the day was all the more important to Gloucestershire because Miles Hammond was injured and James Bracey had been bowled for a single by Tom Aspinwall when he inside-edged the seventh ball of the game into his middle stump.<\/p>\n

The remaining opener then put on 52 with Ollie Price and 43 with Joe Eckland before he was joined by his skipper Jack Taylor in what became the major partnership of the innings. The fourth-wicket pair put on 116 in 20.2 overs before both were dismissed by successive deliveries with the score on 212.<\/p>\n

Having made 75 off 69 balls with eleven fours and a six, Taylor was caught one-handed on the deep square leg boundary by Marcus Harris off Charlie Barnard. Crucially for the momentum of Gloucestershire\u2019s innings, Bancroft was dismissed two short of his seventh List A hundred when was caught down the leg side by Matty Hurst off Shetty.<\/p>\n

Joe Phillips and Tommy Boorman put on 57 for the sixth wicket before Boorman was caught by a Rocky Flintoff\/ Harry Singh relay off Balderson for 28 in the final over. Barnard and Balderson were the most successful Lancashire bowlers with two for 59 and two for 54 respectively.<\/p>\n

Lancashire began their pursuit of 271 in impressive fashion. Hurst put on 92 with Keaton Jennings before being bowled by Aman Rao for 48 and Josh Bohannon made a 47 off 42 balls before he chipped a return catch to Ed Middleton, whom he had hit for three sixes.<\/p>\n

That breakthrough began a superb spell for Gloucestershire, who took five wickets for 31 runs in 64 balls to reduce Lancashire to 183 for six. Included in the collapse was Jennings, who was caught at cover off Price for 67, and Marcus Harris, who chipped Will Williams to midwicket when he had made 12.<\/p>\n

With 79 needed off the last ten overs, Balderson and Shetty mounted a fightback but 31 were still needed off the last four overs. Undaunted, Balderson lifted Williams for two straight sixes in the 48th over and the skipper completed his fifty off 34 balls just before victory he secured victory with his fourth six of a memorable innings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yorkshire vs Derbyshire, Group B, Metro Bank One Day Cup<\/a><\/p>\n

Sam Whiteman\u2019s calm 94 off 98 balls helped Yorkshire prevail by five wickets with four balls left chasing 279 to beat Derbyshire at Scarborough and move to the verge of Metro Bank One-Day knockout qualification.<\/p>\n

Experienced Doncaster-born Australian Whiteman shared a fourth-wicket 107 with James Wharton, who contributed 75 to a recovery from 57 for three as Yorkshire won for the fifth time in seven matches in Group B.<\/p>\n

All-rounder George Hill also had a good day with two wickets and 63 not out off 49 as a fourth defeat all but ends Derbyshire\u2019s hopes. He and Whiteman shared a decisive fifth-wicket 101.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Derbyshire will be mighty frustrated at not posting many more than 278 for eight having been 140 without loss after 26 overs, with Harry Came and Martin Andersson going well. But both fell in a Jafer Chohan over for 58 and 67, and fast bowler Ben Cliff finished with three for 57 from nine overs as the innings subsided.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Having been inserted, Derbyshire made the dream start on a pitch with bounce and movement.<\/p>\n

Hill sent a short ball soaring over wicketkeeper Fin Bean\u2019s head for five wides, and Will Bennison then let an Andersson pull at leg-spinner Chohan on 40 burst through his hands on the deep square-leg boundary.<\/p>\n

Andersson and Came found the perfect balance between caution on a pitch with extra bounce and aggression in reaching their fifties off 66 and 69 balls respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, they both fell to Chohan – back from The Hundred\u00a0 to make his county List A debut – in the 27th over, Came caught at long-off and Andersson at midwicket.<\/p>\n

Dom Bess, Cliff and Hill then all struck as Derbyshire lost momentum – a reverse sweeping Wayne Madsen well caught one-handed at backward point by Bennison – and were 239 for six going into the final five overs.<\/p>\n

Cliff cemented his place at the top of the competition\u2019s leading wicket-taker\u2019s list and now has 18.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Derbyshire, who left out England spinner Shoaib Bashir, then gave themselves an early boost with the ball as Aitchison and Nick Potts removed openers Will Luxton and Adam Lyth as Yorkshire fell to 22 for two. Lyth could only fend a fearsome short ball to second slip.<\/p>\n

Aitchison struck again to remove Bennison with the score on 57 before Wharton and Whiteman united.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This was a game in which no batter ever looked settled.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wharton reached his fifty off 66 balls, and when Whiteman got to his off 62 balls Yorkshire were 163 for three in the 35th over. But Wharton cut Potts to point moments later.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The target became 91 off the last 10 overs at 188 for four.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hill was inventive, and 42 came from four overs from the end of the 41st onwards to put Yorkshire ahead at 235 for four.<\/p>\n

Hill reached his fifty off 42 balls before Whiteman was caught behind down leg off Potts with 14 needed off 11.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fin Bean hit the winning runs with two needed off the last over.<\/p>\n

Yorkshire batter Sam Whiteman said\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was good fun. It’s obviously stressful when you’re chasing and we were sort of under the pump the whole chase. I would have loved to finish it off, but it was really nice to take it deep.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever we\u2019ve lost, we\u2019ve lacked a batter taking the innings deep. So it was nice to do that, and credit to James Wharton and George Hill.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think these wins are always the sweetest, when they’re gritty and the game’s on the line and blokes have to step up. \u201cCertainly any win’s great, but these feel really special. \u201cHopefully we can just keep building on it, go down to Essex (Tuesday) and keep going the way we’re going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Derbyshire captain Harry Came said<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a good game, going to the last over. It was disappointing to fall on the wrong side of the result.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought at halfway we\u2019d done well to get to 280 and it was more than good enough, To fall short is incredibly disappointing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTo lose two set batters in an over makes it really difficult for guys coming in on a pitch which was hard to start on.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBen (Aitchison) and Nick (Potts) started brilliantly with the ball. They have been all comp. To get three early wickets like they did put us on the front foot.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they had a good partnership with Whiteman and Wharton. They both played really well and made it difficult coming into the back end. We just couldn\u2019t quite get it right in the last 10 overs, which was disappointing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Durham vs Middlesex, Group B, Metro Bank One Day Cup<\/a><\/p>\n

Vital contributions from Joe Cracknell and Naavya Sharma helped Middlesex beat Durham by three wickets in a Metro Bank One Day Cup thriller.<\/p>\n

Durham suffered an early blow as they lost England opener Emilio Gay to a shoulder injury, but they recovered well as Alex Lees hit a super century. Will Rhodes then hit a 35-ball fifty to put the hosts in a good position, but Sharma fought back with four wickets as Durham made 303 for seven.<\/p>\n

Middlesex captain Ben Geddes made a half-century to put his side in the driving seat while chasing 304. Cracknell made 84 to take his side close to the target, but Durham fired back with late wickets. However, Toby Roland-Jones played a vital hand to take Middlesex over the line in the final over.<\/p>\n

Middlesex won the toss and elected to bowl first, and Durham suffered an early blow as Gay departed the field with a shoulder injury.<\/p>\n

Ollie Robinson joined Lees in the middle and he produced a fluent cameo before Henry Brookes got him lbw.<\/p>\n

Lees started to motor after Stokes joined him at the crease and the opener passed fifty. Ben Stokes looked like he was finding his groove, but he smashed a full toss from Hollman in the direction of Geddes, who produced an excellent catch at mid-on.<\/p>\n

Lees continued to accelerate and the left-hander notched up his second century in this year\u2019s competition. However, he was dismissed soon after, with Brookes getting the opener caught on the legside boundary.<\/p>\n

Rhodes picked up the mantle from Lees as he smashed 17 off a Noah Cornwell over and he passed fifty off just 35 balls, but the all-rounder chipped one straight to cover off the bowling of Sharma soon after.<\/p>\n

The visitors\u2019 comeback continued as the impressive Sharma picked up the scalps of Kasey Aldridge, Colin Ackermann and George Drissell, set Middlesex a target of 304.<\/p>\n

The visitors\u2019 chase got off to a good start, but Lees produced a sublime one-handed grab at point to hand Luke Robinson the scalp of Nathan Fernandes.<\/p>\n

Geddes came to the crease and found the boundary with ease as his side took chunks out of Durham\u2019s total, but he lost Josh de Caires at the other end as the opener holed out to mid-on off the bowling of Aldridge.<\/p>\n

Geddes notched up his fifty in quick time, but Durham had a huge chance to claim a third wicket, as Cracknell pulled a Rhodes delivery straight to Shafiqullah Ghafari on the boundary but he palmed it over the ropes.<\/p>\n

Cracknell was making Durham pay for dropping him as he passed fifty, but Durham did get a third as Ghafari bowled Geddes for a vital 77. Cracknell took Middlesex closer to the target but he was dismissed by James Minto.<\/p>\n

Stokes then bowled Hollman to swing momentum back to Durham, and Robinson bowled Jack Nelson. Stokes accounted for Zafar Gohar, but some late hitting from Roland-Jones and Brookes secured Middlesex a huge win.<\/p>\n

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell said:\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s the beauty of this competition. The initial reaction is disappointment, credit to Middlesex they kept fighting, we kept fighting. Both teams had their chances to try and put the other side away, but just couldn’t land the killer blow. At the end of the day, it’s worthy of a top of the table clash, credit to them and we’ll walk away licking our wounds, knowing we have to bounce back on Sunday.”<\/p>\n

(On Essex) “The back end of the season, you feel like every game’s a final so to speak. We’ve got control of our own destiny if we play well, you lose a game in the last over, you don’t just throw your toys out of the pram and think ‘how bad’s this?’, you’ve got to look at so much good that came from that game.”<\/p>\n

(On Cracknell dropped catch) “Ultimately if you drop catches you lose, we’ve done that a few times this year and we’ve got away from it in different formats, but you can’t afford to drop good players. Ultimately it probably cost us the game.”<\/p>\n

“It was probably par (303), we were getting told from the centre that it was actually quite a difficult wicket, that it wasn’t as easy as it looked. A little bit two-paced, but from where I was standing it looked like the boys were hitting it quite well. Leesy (Alex Lees) was absolutely magnificent again, disappointing when he got out, that was the difference between 300 and 330.”<\/p>\n

Middlesex’s Luke Hollman said:\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s a brilliant win against a very strong side. They’re one of the teams in and around the top of the table, so to come here and win is a fantastic feat and takes even more momentum into the last two games of the group stage.”<\/p>\n

“Statistically it showed chasing, especially under the lights, have proved pretty positive in terms of getting results and winning, certainly in white ball cricket. It’s been supported here again by us winning. It was a great game of cricket between two very good sides.\u00a0<\/p>\n

(On Toby Roland-Jones at the end) “Not just this game, but for the last 15 to 16 years he’s been one of the most special players Middlesex have had. And for him to win the game like that with Henry Brookes was superb really. He’s a superb figure in the changing room and someone a lot of guys look up to. He’s a fantastic performer, a fantastic competitor and those two personality traits came out in that chase scenario.”<\/p>\n

(On Naavya Sharma) “He’s a seriously, seriously massive prospect. We’ve been really lucky he’s been playing in this competition and not being picked for The Hundred. He’s been absolutely phenomenal, not just at the end, but up front as well. He’s consistently taking wickets, he’s a fantastic bowler.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0A third century in as many innings by Worcestershire Rapids captain Jake Libby guided his side to victory over Sussex Sharks and kept alive their chances of progressing in the Metro Bank One Day Cup.<\/p>\n

Their victory, with ten balls to spare, was built on a fourth wicket partnership of 118 in 15 overs between Libby (109 not out) and Kashif Ali (73) and was their fourth in six matches while Sussex have now lost five of their six outings.<\/p>\n

The impressive left-hander Isaac Mohammed and Brett D\u2019Oliveira had put on 60 for the first wicket in 11 overs before D\u2019Oliveira skied Jack Carson to Ollie Robinson at long-on.<\/p>\n

Isaac was second out at 83 when he top-edged to midwicket and Sussex were on top when Rehaan Edavalath, sweeping, had his off stump knocked by Carson; 105 for three in the 20th.<\/p>\n

But Libby and Kashif turned the match, targeting 19-year-old seamer Freddie Price, who conceded 20\u00a0 in the 33rd over to bring up the Worcestershire 200 and the 100 partnership.<\/p>\n

Sussex hit back with the wickets of Kashif and the gifted Henry Cullen but Libby remained to his side home with the big-hitting Ben Allison, who struck 20 off nine balls.<\/p>\n

At one point Sussex looked capable of reaching 350. Haines and Charlie Tear got the Sharks off to a flyer after the Rapids had won the toss and chosen to bowl, although Haines on nine was missed at first slip off \u00a0Ben Allsison.<\/p>\n

Both men drove fluently to bring up the fifty from 54 balls and at the end of the ten-over powerplay they had shared 13 boundaries in a score of 66.<\/p>\n

Worcestershire broke through in the 11th over when Tear, who had scored a run-a-ball 30, clipped Ben Gibbon to midwicket where Isaac \u00a0took a good low catch.<\/p>\n

Four overs later his opening partner fell, Haines playing a flat-footed drive and edging Gibbon to the keeper for a 48-ball 40.<\/p>\n

George Thomas and Oli Carter then put on 40 for the third wicket in six overs. But not for the first time this season the Sharks were struggling to find a top-order batter capable of playing a definitive innings.<\/p>\n

Carter had made just 22 from 24 balls when he spooned a gentle catch to mid-on. Thomas hit three fours and the first six of the day when he hit left-arm spinner Fateh Singh back over his head. But then he was yorked by the clever leg-spinner D\u2019Oliveira for 39.<\/p>\n

Simpson hit a 28-ball 30 but when he was fifth out at 198, failing to clear long-on with his lofted drive, it brought in Hudson-Prentice to play the star innings for his side. He scored at almost 200, finding the boundary on both sides of the wicket and making it difficult for Rapids captain Jake Libby to set a field.<\/p>\n

With Jack Leaning (50) sheet-anchoring the innings, much as he had done in the previous game at Arundel, the Sharks were able to set a challenging total.<\/p>\n

Somerset vs Surrey, Group A, Metro Bank One Day Cup<\/a><\/p>\n

Somerset 368-9 (Lammonby 114, Goldsworthy 83, Vaughan 52, Taylor 3-41) beat Surrey 180 (Blake 47, Leach 3-29, Vaughan 3-41) by 188 runs.<\/p>\n

Tom Lammonby registered a career-best List-A score to propel Somerset to a 188-run win over Surrey at The Cooper Associates Ground and keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Metro Bank One Day Cup competition.<\/p>\n

Raising a brilliant 114 from 96 deliveries with 13 fours and 2 sixes, the left-hander shared in a stand of 152 for the second wicket with captain Lewis Goldsworthy, who contributed an 86-ball 83 as the home side ran up an imposing 368-9 on a true Taunton surface. Archie Vaughan weighed in with 52, while James Taylor proved the pick of the Surrey bowlers with 3-41.<\/p>\n

Up against it after slipping to 65-4, Surrey were bowled out for 188 in 38.2 overs, Archie Vaughan taking 3-41 and Jack Leach 3-29 in a disciplined Somerset bowling performance. Josh Blake\u2019s 47 from 53 balls proved too little too late.<\/p>\n

Somerset lost the toss, but their two most experienced batters rose to the occasion, Goldsworthy and Lammonby pulling and cutting their way to a 50 partnership from 51 balls. Full of confidence after scoring a hundred in his last Taunton appearance 11 days earlier, Goldsworthy went to his eleventh List-A half century at a run-a-ball with nine boundaries.<\/p>\n

Ryan Patel spurned an opportunity to terminate his innings on 56 when putting down a sharp chance at extra cover off the bowling of Ralphie Albert. Goldsworthy made the Londoners pay, advancing the partnership to 100 via 107 deliveries, while Lammonby drove Ollie Sykes over the long-on boundary to raise his fourth One Day Cup 50 of the season.<\/p>\n

Having deployed eight bowlers in an attempt to break the partnership, Surrey skipper Rory Burns was relieved when Benji Floros finally had Goldsworthy held at extra cover. But Somerset were ascendant while Lammonby remained at large, and the left hander hit Sykes down the ground for his 12th four to register his third List-A hundred via 84 balls.<\/p>\n

Lammonby was then hurried by a quicker delivery from Taylor and was caught in the deep. Floros had Josh Thomas held at long-on with the score 260-5 in the 35th, after which Vaughan and Kian Roberts (32, 24) ensured there was no let-up, staging a useful alliance of 60 as Somerset ran-up their highest ever List-A score in matches against Surrey.<\/p>\n

Migael Pretorius then reaffirmed West Country superiority in a new-ball burst of 2-16 in six overs, removing Dom Sibley and Adam Thomas cheaply. Succumbing to scoreboard pressure, Burns played a rash shot and lost leg stump to Roberts, while Ryan Patel, having flirted with danger in crafting 40 from 46 balls, offered a return catch to Vaughan as the visitors lurched to 65-4 inside 17 overs.<\/p>\n

Their much-vaunted top-order having fallen short, Surrey were heavily dependent upon Sykes and Blake, who came together with a further 304 runs required from 34.5 overs. The fifth wicket pair added 57, only for Sykes to be caught and bowled by Vaughan, his departure signalling the end of London ambition.<\/p>\n

Somerset batter Tom Lammonby said: “The boys want a round of beers for a career-best score, so that innings is going to hit my bank account hard. I’ve put some innings together throughout the competition and it felt as though a big one was on the way. It’s nice to get past the three figures. I think we probably got the risk-reward balance right today, especially up top. It was nice to set a platform and take a bit of pressure off the middle and lower orders. One day cricket can be tricky up top with the ball nipping about, but I thought we absorbed that pretty well. It was fun batting with Golders (Lewis Goldsworthy) and, had he not go out when he did, we might have scored something nearer to 400. It was then good seeing how far we could take that as a team. It was a pleasing result and performance and now we have two games left to try and qualify.”<\/p>\n

Surrey bowler Hishaam Khan said: “Obviously, there were a few things that didn’t go right for us today. A few bad overs at the end of the Somerset innings really cost us and left us with a big target to chase. Tom Lammonby and Lewis Goldsworthy batter really well, but we still created chances. Had we taken some of those early chances, it might have been a different story. It was a really good wicket and we still felt we were in with a chance. But we kept losing wickets at regular intervals and, although a few of the lads made starts, they were unable to go on and score big. We never really built the momentum we needed. But we’re still well-placed and, providing we can win our last game against Nottinghamshire, there is still a chance we can make the knockout stages.”<\/p>\n

Leicestershire vs Warwickshire, Group A, Metro Bank One Day Cup<\/a><\/p>\n

New Zealand international Nick Kelly hit 86 to help lead Leicestershire Foxes to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Warwickshire in the Metro Bank One Day Cup at Uptonsteel Grace Road, Leicester.<\/p>\n

Kelly mounted a Foxes fightback, seizing the initiative after Olly Hannon-Dalby (3-27) ran through Leicestershire\u2019s top-order, reducing them to 10-3, chasing a below-par 221.<\/p>\n

Kelly was joined in a stand of 47 with Ian Holland (30) but when he fell with Leicestershire on 117-6, Ben Green (45 not out) combined with Kelly in a further partnership of 75. While Kelly departed with 29 needed off 42 balls, Green and Tom Scriven saw the Foxes home.<\/p>\n

Leicestershire\u2019s innings began in similar fashion with Ben Green\u2019s double-strike which helped reduce the visitors to 31-4 on a slow pitch offering early movement. Kai Smith, though, struck 57 as he led a Warwickshire counterattack.<\/p>\n

Smith rebuilt in stands of 62 with Vansh Jani (33) and 68 with George Garton (38), but the visitors were forced to play catch-up after that early damage.<\/p>\n

Earlier Rob Yates and Malik fell pushing low to the slips off Ben Green and Holland respectively, while Green moved one back into bowl Dan Mousley. They lost another when Alex Davies uppercut Scriven straight to slip, leaving the visitors in peril.<\/p>\n

When Smith got off the mark, flicking Scriven through square-leg, it was Warwickshire\u2019s first boundary in almost 13 overs.<\/p>\n

Runs flowed as Jani muscled Alex Green through midwicket and straight-drove Ben Mike for six. The Leicestershire seamer broke the partnership though when Jani was caught behind off an attempted pull.<\/p>\n

Garton kept up the attack against Patel and got creative too, coming down the pitch to pull Scriven square for six.<\/p>\n

Smith swung consecutive boundaries legside off Patel and edged Scriven to reach 50 but holed out at mid-off shortly after.<\/p>\n

Next ball Garton was squared up and adjudged caught behind off Alex Green, although replays suggested he was unfortunate.<\/p>\n

Michael Booth and Ethan Bamber then shared a rapid 49-run stand before Patel and Holland wrapped up the innings.<\/p>\n

Chasing, Rishi Patel clipped Hannon-Dalby to deep square-leg before Hannon-Dalby jagged one back to castle Mike and bowled Stephen Eskinazi with his next delivery.<\/p>\n

Jonny Tattersall counterattacked, playing Bamber off the backfoot for consecutive cover boundaries before Booth trapped him lbw.<\/p>\n

Kelly played a beautiful straight drive off Bamber and smacked Hannon-Dalby through extra-cover, while Ben Cox took three boundaries off one Booth over.\u00a0 Their alliance ended though when Cox was squared up by Taylor and was caught behind.<\/p>\n

Holland punched Booth to deep-third, but the next boundary did not come until almost seven overs later when Kelly skipped forward to Yates. Despite that, the pair kept the scoreboard ticking and the required rate below five until Holland fell lbw to Booth.<\/p>\n

Kelly though flayed Booth through the covers and to reach 50 off 73 balls, pulled Taylor high over square-leg for four and smacked two off-side boundaries off Booth, the initiative firmly in Leicestershire\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n

But when Kelly smashed a sharp return catch back to Yates, Warwickshire threatened a late surprise until Green pulled behind square for six.<\/p>\n
