Edinburgh Zoo\u2019s one-week-old pygmy hippo has been named.<\/p>\n

Keepers have named the new \u201cpint-sized\u201d arrival Piper, after her first health check confirmed she\u2019s a girl.<\/p>\n

The youngster was born on Friday July 31, on the same day the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) announced mum Gloria was expecting.<\/p>\n

She is currently being cared for behind closed doors.<\/p>\n

Jade Robertson, senior hoofstock keeper at Edinburgh Zoo, said: \u201cWe all felt she was a wee girl from the moment we met her, so it is good to have that hunch confirmed!<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went with Piper because she\u2019s like a little bagpipe \u2013 always making cute little huffs and puffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vets have weighed Piper, given her a warm bath and carried out examinations.<\/p>\n

Jade added: \u201cShe\u2019s still only a dot at the moment, weighing just under 5.5 kilos.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe will soon start piling on the pounds because her mum\u2019s milk is so rich and nutritious.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Piper gets bigger, we\u2019ll start to see more of her personality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mum Gloria is no stranger to the spotlight, or motherhood, having given birth to viral internet sensation Haggis back in 2024.<\/p>\n

Haggis captured hearts across the world after featuring in viral videos, and even making her way onto Saturday Night Live.<\/p>\n

\"HaggisRZSSHaggis became an internet sensation RZSS<\/p>\n

Last October, Haggis was moved to her new home at Wingham Wildlife Park in Kent.<\/p>\n

Dr Stephanie Mota, head vet at RZSS, said: \u201cI was really pleased with mum and baby during the health check.<\/p>\n

\u201cGloria did a great job raising Amara and Haggis, and she\u2019s very comfortable with the keepers and vets knowing we are there to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucky visitors may even get the chance to spot mum and daughter over the coming days, but access to the zoo\u2019s hippo house will depend on the pair\u2019s wellbeing.<\/p>\n
