Suffolk declared a drought as hot weather continues<\/a>\n<\/p>\n\n The last time a drought was officially declared in Suffolk was 2022, when there was a prolonged period of with little rain between March and August.\n<\/p>\n
\n This lead to an increase in water usage and a drought plans were declared by 17 of the 18 water companies in the UK.\n<\/p>\n

\n Last week, Suffolk fell under the list of designated drought zones put together by the Environment Agency.\n<\/p>\n
\n Jack Cripps, head of marketing and communications at Suffolk Wildlife Trust, said: “Droughts make it harder for badgers to find food, forcing them out of their usual hunting grounds into different areas, including those more commonly occupied by humans in their desperate search for food.\n<\/p>\n
\n “As the ground becomes drier, the worms and invertebrates badgers feed on burrow deeper into the soil in search of moisture, making it more difficult and tiresome for badgers to find their next meal.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Those looking to support their local badgers during this period of hot weather can leave a small dish of water out in the evenings alongside healthy, natural snacks like unsalted nuts and chopped fruits such as apple, pear or plum.”\n<\/p>\n
