As a mustachioed Brooks Koepka sat in the back of a golf cart, managing passenger logistics by declaring two spots were left in the cart with Keegan Bradley at the wheel, a strange sense of normalcy took over.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s still some novelty to Koepka being back on tour, sure. It\u2019s been a weird five years.<\/p>\n
At that moment, though, he was just another PGA Tour pro riding back to the clubhouse in a weather delay. Another guy without exemptions playing this week at the Wyndham Championship \u2014 the final regular-season event \u2014 to make it into the FedEx Cup Playoffs.<\/p>\n
He was also a golfer who birdied four of the previous seven holes to rise from the cut line to four shots back with his season on the line \u2014 or, maybe more realistically, a golfer three shots back of what he truly needed.<\/p>\n
This weekend, Brooks Koepka is the most interesting story in golf. In his first season back with the PGA Tour after leaving LIV Golf to accept a reinstatement agreement without unearned exemptions into Signature Events, he needs a minimum finish of solo fourth or better to jump from No. 86 in the standings into the top 70 necessary to make the playoffs.<\/p>\n
His 66 on Friday pushed him to T20 with 36 holes left.<\/p>\n
Hossler keeps hold of Wyndham lead, while Koivun remains on playoff bubble<\/p>\n
The Wyndham is often sneakily the most interesting event on the tour calendar and a healthy representation of the meritocracy the PGA Tour is attempting to emphasize, with its Future Competition Committee reshaping its model for 2028.<\/p>\n
Real stakes. No handouts for big names. More scarcity and clarity in who plays for what.<\/p>\n
The Wyndham has provided that for a few years, since the tour shrunk its postseason to 70 golfers and played up that battle for the final spot at an underrated Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. This week, Bradley barely made the cut and entered the week 72nd.<\/p>\n
Jason Day is 75th. Tony Finau is No. 89 while Andrew Novak \u2014 a Ryder Cup contender 12 months ago \u2014 is 91st. The current solo leader, Beau Hossler, entered the week No. 122 and needs a win to advance.<\/p>\n
It goes both ways, too \u2014 new names can push themselves into contention. Rookie Ben James just turned pro in June, and at T2, he could jump in from No. 141 with a win. Rising phenom Jackson Koivun entered the week No. 70, needing a solid finish to keep his place.<\/p>\n
But the real point here is Koepka.<\/p>\n
When the five-time major winner and LIV defector accepted the tour\u2019s one-time-only \u201cReturning Membership Program\u201d available only to a select few recent major winners to come back without a suspension period, he forfeited any star privilege. Outside the Players Championship, he accepted he couldn\u2019t play in the far more prestigious Signature Events unless he played his way in.<\/p>\n
No guaranteed spots. No sponsor exemptions. He had to earn it.<\/p>\n
The 36-year-old leaned into that mentality, saying he enjoyed the return to his early years \u201cgrinding\u201d on the Challenge Tour to even make his way onto the main European Tour years before he became the major-winning golfing great. When he was asked last month at the Scottish Open about the pressure of still being on the outside looking in for the playoffs and Signatures, he said: \u201cIt\u2019s not going to impact anything I do. I feel like, I\u2019ve said it multiple times, good play takes care of itself.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve got an opportunity to go out there and go play well this week.\u201d<\/p>\n
What\u2019s more difficult to swallow is the way his results have fallen short.<\/p>\n
Koepka is actually striking it well. Really well. He\u2019s 12th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee-to-green, and it\u2019s been his best approach season since 2021. He\u2019s slightly above average with his short game, too.<\/p>\n
He can\u2019t putt. It\u2019s been a slight issue for a few years now, but he\u2019s fallen to No. 116 on tour in putting, which has held back his most excellent ball-striking weeks to mere T15-type results.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Koepka is in a better place in more ways than one. In his limited remarks on why he left LIV, he focused on personal and family reasons, including being closer to home as LIV became more of an international league. Koepka has a son, Crew, but Koepka\u2019s wife, Jena, announced last year they suffered a miscarriage at 16 weeks.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s why when asked about the most disappointing part of his return campaign, he acknowledged his putting but quickly shifted his focus.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like last year I wasn\u2019t in the headspace to actually play good golf, and now that everything is kind of cleared up and I\u2019m in a better \u2014 we all have that, right?\u201d Koepka said. \u201cIt\u2019s life. Sometimes it\u2019s easy, and sometimes it\u2019s difficult. There\u2019s a lot of stuff, like I said, off the golf course, on the golf course, didn\u2019t matter. Didn\u2019t feel like I could catch a break, as a player, as a person, as a family.\u201d<\/p>\n
As easy as golf\u2019s civil war has made it to be cynical, the difference in Koepka\u2019s demeanor has been apparent all year and made that reasoning believable. Even if the departures of Koepka and Patrick Reed from LIV appear vindicated now as LIV\u2019s seemingly endless funding from the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund is gone and the league flounders for support<\/a>, it\u2019s what\u2019s happening now that\u2019s more intriguing.<\/p>\n We\u2019re getting a sneak peek of the PGA Tour\u2019s future model at the Wyndham, with an equal, fixed field and true meritocracy to avoid relegation.<\/p>\n Koepka needs a very strong weekend to make it to the first playoff event in Memphis, Tenn.
