A young McCartney would see him printed on copies of NME in the local record shop that he frequented, and because his music wasn’t being played on the radio constantly in 1956, at least to his knowledge, he didn’t actually know what Presley sounded like until curiosity got the better of him.

He eventually found himself to be completely entranced by Elvis’ captivating performance style, which was unlike anything he’d ever heard until that point in his life. It differed significantly from the music he was used to hearing courtesy of family members or on the radio, especially from a lyrical point of view, and his first time hearing ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ was a truly eye-opening experience.

“Elvis is a truly great vocalist, and you can hear why on this song,” he would later admit in a 2005 interview with Uncut. “His phrasing, his use of echo, it’s all so beautiful. It’s the way he sings it, too. As if he’s singing it from the depths of hell. It’s a perfect example of a singer being in command of the song.”

McCartney would continue, arguing that the song also delivers from a musical perspective, with the interplay between the double bass and piano creating an overall atmosphere that has stuck with him since he first heard it. “The echo is just stunning,” McCartney continued, referring once again to a feature that would eventually rear its head at a most unexpected moment during his time with The Beatles.

The echo that McCartney was so impressed with ended up being a feature that he’d try to incorporate into his own compositions, and although some of the band’s earlier works bear a slight resemblance to what Presley had done a decade before, this influence even appears on some of their more elaborate and adventurous works.

“When The Beatles were recording, we’d often ask George Martin for ‘the Elvis echo’,” McCartney stated, before proclaiming: “I think we got it down perfectly on ‘A Day in the Life’.”

Further reading: From The Vault

The thing is, with Presley’s recording, this echo is unlikely to have ever been a deliberate stylistic choice, and more a product of technological limitations at the time it was recorded and also given how studio slots were much more a case of recording a take as quickly as possible.

There certainly is an echo that can be heard in the reverberating vocals at various points in the song, more so in John Lennon’s sections, but the piano frequently sounds as though it’s being played in a vast but empty room, allowing notes to linger on longer than they would in a dead space. However, to think that the production technique on ‘A Day in the Life’, of all Beatles songs, was a result of Presley’s influence, is baffling, especially given how it’s so far removed from anything Elvis ever did.

McCartney admits that there are other Elvis songs that have gone on to surpass ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ as his personal favourite, but for it to have had so much of an impact on him that he was trying to copy its production over ten years later just goes to show how important the track is to the history of rock and roll.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE The Far Out Beatles Newsletter

All the latest stories about The Beatles from the independent voice of culture.
Straight to your inbox.

Credit: Far Out / Apple Corps / Sony Music Entertainment Mon 10 August 2026 1:00, UK Just because…

[28
33244,162972,19405,189535,18254,96,128,6470,6454,37060,10447,56,54,55
post-733185","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1950s","tag-162972","tag-1960s","tag-189535","tag-elvis-presley","tag-entertainment","tag-music","tag-paul-mccartney","tag-psychedelic","tag-rock-and-roll","tag-the-beatles","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
