Rather than relying on one decisive mountain stage to dictate the race, the parcours created opportunities for different types of riders to influence the story, while keeping the overall result uncertain right up until the final stage. There were very few places to hide, with the route repeatedly offering opportunities for attacks, comebacks and tactical gambles.

After an opening double-header of sprint stages that rewarded positioning and nerve, the race opened up into punchier terrain that suited a wide variety of riders. The third time trial in the race’s history on stage 4 gave a good indication of how the GC contenders were faring, and the rolling vineyards of Belleville-en-Beaujolais on stage five gave fans some of the most exciting racing we’ve seen all season.

Keeping with ASO’s tradition of including just one iconic summit finish, Mont Ventoux on stage 7 provided a dramatic mountain showdown with a worthy champion in Kasia Niewiadoma taking the spoils. Despite the dominance on display on the mythical slopes of the Giant of Provence, the race remained open, with all still to play for on the final two stages in and around Nice.

Crucially, the race saved something for the end.
