Don Henley<\/a> wasn\u2019t one to get too sentimental on every single Eagles record. <\/p>\n

Half the battle was making sure there was genuine emotion behind everything they sang, but Henley\u2019s songwriting often went beyond that. Many of his songs were about observing American life and commenting on what he saw, rather than simply falling back on the same old love songs. He also felt there was a deeper sense of nostalgia in their world that the band had not always fully explored.<\/p>\n

And I don\u2019t mean the nostalgia for the Old West like they were talking about on Desperado. That was a clever idea for only a few songs on that record, and while the rest of their higher-ups never cared for the cowboy mythology<\/a> behind a lot of their songs around that time, Henley was at least ready to try his hand at tunes that had a bit more of a mythological edge to them every now and again.<\/p>\n

I mean, take \u2018Hotel California\u2019<\/a>, for instance. That song is dripping with style and substance, but when you look at what Henley\u2019s talking about, it feels like a cold history of what the City of Angels could be like for people that don\u2019t make it to the top and spend the rest of their lives trying to chase after dreams and passions that they might not even realise aren\u2019t going to come true. It\u2019s hard to take in, but Henley didn\u2019t realise that also applied to him in more ways than one just one album later.<\/p>\n

Hotel California was one of the greatest records of its time, but The Long Run was the first time that they started from scratch with no inspiration left. There was already pressure to make the whole thing sound just as big as their last record, but every member of the band knew that it was going to be painful<\/a> bringing something else to life all over again. And listening to \u2018The Sad Cafe\u2019, it was almost like Henley knew this would be their final record.<\/p>\n

The whole song is like a sad postscript for the version of Los Angeles that they could never go back to. Just a few years before, they had spent their nights going to restaurants like Dan Tana\u2019s and coming up with the lyrics to tunes like \u2018Lyin\u2019 Eyes\u2019 right there on the spot, but he felt that whenever they got back up to their usual tricks, it was like nothing ever felt the same when going back to their old stomping grounds.<\/p>\n

Those days were gone, but Henley knew that he wanted to keep those memories in his heart the rest of his life in this song, saying<\/a>, \u201cIt was something to remember. That was a wonderful time in Los Angeles. The city was alive with magic and a sense of possibility. People were warmer and more open than they are now. Then, of course, there was the dark side. Friends and acquaintances of ours (from that era) had begun to meet untimely ends. But the Troubadour, Dan Tana\u2019s restaurant, the train \u2014 all those things served as a great metaphor for the search, the journey that so many of us were on.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while the song isn\u2019t necessarily one of their biggest hits, it does show a side of the band that didn\u2019t come out all that often, either. So many people had been trying to match what they were doing, but their natural way of singing about these slice-of-life places was everything that anyone could have asked them to do.<\/p>\n

They weren\u2019t going to be going back to those places as much anymore, but \u2018The Sad Cafe\u2019 is a good time capsule to those days where everything felt possible. Henley may have been one of the few who were fortunate to make it all the way to the top of that mountain, but when you\u2019ve gone that far away from home for so long, it slowly starts to sink in that that vision of home is gone forever. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
