It didn&#8217;t hit the ground, but instead it passed straight through the sky.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/watch-a-fireball-burn-a-300-mile-path-above-the-midwest-us-video\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/watch-a-fireball-burn-a-300-mile-path-above-the-midwest-us-video\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/watch-a-fireball-burn-a-300-mile-path-above-the-midwest-us-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fireball<\/a> entered the atmosphere somewhere over Utah and passed northwards, leaving the atmosphere over Alberta, Canada about 100 seconds later.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis of its trajectory showed the object was about 10 to 45 feet in diameter, depending on whether it was an icy <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">comet<\/a> or a denser, rocky <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KNyXQdo3ZV9sEfDd3pyyYR.jpg\" alt=\"a meteorite is seen falling to Earth during a bright sunny day over a mountain range and lake.\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KNyXQdo3ZV9sEfDd3pyyYR.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KNyXQdo3ZV9sEfDd3pyyYR.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: NASA\/Astronomy Photo of the Day\/James Baker)<a id=\"elk-9d840f22-92ae-11f1-b0b2-0fa4376dc769\"\/>Why it mattered<a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9d840fe0-92ae-11f1-9492-a506faf632b7-0\">When we think of fireballs, we typically think of &#8220;shooting stars&#8221; during a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/meteor-showers-2026\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/meteor-showers-2026\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/meteor-showers-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meteor shower<\/a>: a night sky spectacle that&#8217;s brief but brilliant. But a daytime fireball is something else altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Nighttime meteors are typically tiny particles of space dust or rocks that burn up as they streak through <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>. While they look impressive in the night sky, they&#8217;re relatively dim. City streetlights or even a bright <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">full moon<\/a> can outshine them.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9d8410da-92ae-11f1-b689-a34765511eb9\">But a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/rare-daytime-fireball-may-have-dropped-meteorites-on-texas-heres-where-to-find-them\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/rare-daytime-fireball-may-have-dropped-meteorites-on-texas-heres-where-to-find-them\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/rare-daytime-fireball-may-have-dropped-meteorites-on-texas-heres-where-to-find-them\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">daytime fireball<\/a> is caused by something large enough to be visible in the sky in broad daylight, something large and fast enought to light up a sky brighter than a sunlit day. That&#8217;s what happened today in 1972.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9d841152-92ae-11f1-88fd-99bdb2801297\">Today, an event like the &#8220;Great Daylight Fireball&#8221; of 1972 (as it came to be named) would be visible to potentially millions of witnesses as it streaked over the United States and Canada, and we&#8217;d likely see social media flooded <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/rare-daytime-fireball-spotted-from-orbit-as-residents-report-powerful-sonic-boom\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/rare-daytime-fireball-spotted-from-orbit-as-residents-report-powerful-sonic-boom\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/meteor-showers\/rare-daytime-fireball-spotted-from-orbit-as-residents-report-powerful-sonic-boom\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with images and video<\/a>.
