\tIt’s Not Just the System – It’s Trust<\/p>\n

\t(Image Credit: Kevin Diss Photography<\/a>)<\/p>\n \tOne of the strongest recurring themes across both the survey and Facebook discussion was that integrity remains golf’s biggest challenge.<\/p>\n \tOne survey respondent summed up the opinion shared by many:<\/p>\n \t“The WHS is fair. People abusing it isn’t.”<\/p>\n \tAnother added:<\/p>\n \t“There are always people who manipulate their handicaps.”<\/p>\n \tOn Facebook, a similar view emerged:<\/p>\n \t“The problem isn’t the system, it’s the lack of integrity with a lot of golfers when golf is a sport based on integrity.”<\/p>\n \tEven golfers who broadly support the WHS frequently qualified their answers with the same caveat.<\/p>\n \tAs one Facebook commenter put it:<\/p>\n \t“If everyone registers every round it works.”<\/p>\n \tGeneral Play Scores Continues to Divide Opinion<\/p>\n \tIf there was one aspect of WHS that united critics more than any other, it was the use of General Play scores<\/a>.<\/p>\n \tAcross both the survey responses and Facebook comments, golfers repeatedly argued that General Play rounds make handicap manipulation easier<\/a> and reduce confidence in competition results.<\/p>\n \tOne survey respondent wrote:<\/p>\n \t“Too easy to manipulate handicaps with general play rounds. Only competition rounds should be accepted for handicap purposes.”<\/p>\n \tAnother suggested:<\/p>\n \t“It would be far better if there were qualifying criteria – e.g. eight qualifying rounds in the previous 12 months.”<\/p>\n \tMeanwhile, Facebook users repeatedly called for General Play scores to only reduce handicaps rather than increase them, with comments such as:<\/p>\n \t“Competition rounds should only count.” and “General play should be reductions only.”<\/p>\n \tWhether that is the right solution or not, there was little doubt that confidence in General Play scores remains one of the biggest sticking points for many club golfers.<\/p>\n \tAt my own club there has been pressure for us to record our scores every time we play.\u00a0<\/p>\n \tI want to state here and now that the idea of handicap manipulation makes me angry – I have always believed that the whole point of the handicap system is that it gives you a benchmark, one that you would strive to improve.\u00a0<\/p>\n \tEven at my advanced age, I play golf to improve. But I simply refuse to submit every card for handicap purposes because there are times when I just want to play social golf. And there is nothing wrong with that. My conscience is clear.<\/p>\n \tLower Handicap Golfers Feel They’re Fighting Uphill Battle<\/p>\n \tAnother dominant theme was the perceived advantage enjoyed by higher handicap players.<\/p>\n \tMany lower handicap golfers argued that while they may improve by a handful of shots on a great day, higher handicap golfers can outperform their handicap by considerably more, making it increasingly difficult to compete<\/a> in Stableford and handicap events.<\/p>\n \tOne survey respondent explained:<\/p>\n \t“As with all low handicap golfers I am frustrated that my very best round probably equates to 38 or 39 Stableford points and I’m regularly beaten by a 20 handicapper and above who can shoot 40-plus.”<\/p>\n \tI can relate to this one. I frequently record 36-40 points and never get close to the prizes but it doesn\u2019t concern me. And bear in mind that the scorching summer we have experienced has led to rock-hard fairways that offer 50+ yards of roll – and that is almost certain to help high handicappers more than single-figure players.<\/p>\n \tAnother commented:<\/p>\n \t“The differential between low and high handicaps is too great, making it near-impossible to be competitive.”<\/p>\n \tFacebook reflected exactly the same frustration.<\/p>\n \tOne golfer wrote:<\/p>\n \t“Anyone with playing handicaps of 14 or less stands on the first tee knowing they have to have the round of their life to get anywhere near.”<\/p>\n \tOthers pointed to increasingly common low winning scores in Open competitions and questioned whether they reflected a genuinely level playing field.<\/p>\n \tCalls For Simplicity<\/p>\n \tAlongside concerns over fairness came repeated calls for a simpler handicap system.<\/p>\n \tSeveral golfers admitted they preferred the previous CONGU system because it was easier to understand and easier to follow.<\/p>\n \tOne Facebook user simply wrote:<\/p>\n \t“Bring back CONGU.”<\/p>\n \tAnother added:<\/p>\n \t“The old system was easier to use.”<\/p>\n \tMeanwhile, one survey respondent argued:<\/p>\n \t“Definitely not… I think it should go back to the old way… The best eight scores can be doctored and manipulated.”<\/p>\n \tOthers suggested reducing the calculation from the best eight of the last 20 rounds to a smaller, more recent sample to better reflect current form.<\/p>\n \tIf you have played golf for any length of time then you don\u2019t need me to tell you that handicap systems are the most divisive issue and that no matter which system you adopt, it will always be open to abuse.<\/p>\n \tThe World Handicap System Has Its Supporters<\/p>\n \tDespite the criticism, the discussion wasn’t one-sided. Many golfers acknowledged that no handicap system can ever eliminate cheating entirely.<\/p>\n \tAs one survey respondent observed: “There are abuses in every system and cheats work these out no matter what system you use.”<\/p>\n \tOthers praised the WHS for introducing a universal handicap that works across different countries and golf courses, while recognising that slope rating has improved fairness when travelling between venues.<\/p>\n \tSeveral golfers also argued that responsibility ultimately lies with clubs and players, rather than the handicap calculation itself.<\/p>\n \tWhat Does This All Mean For Golf?<\/p>\n \tPerhaps the most interesting takeaway isn’t that more than half of golfers believe the World Handicap System doesn’t currently create a fair playing field.<\/p>\n \tIt’s why.<\/p>\n \tAcross both the survey and the hundreds of Facebook comments, the conversation rarely centred on the numbers behind WHS alone. Instead, golfers repeatedly returned to the same issues: trust, integrity, General Play submissions, qualification criteria and whether the system leaves too much room for manipulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n \tThat helps explain why more than 25% of you selected “Mostly” rather than giving a simple yes or no answer. For many golfers, the foundations of the World Handicap System aren’t the problem – but confidence in how it is used certainly is.<\/p>\n \tWhether governing bodies decide to make further refinements remains to be seen, but one thing is clear from Golfshake’s latest survey and the lively debate it generated across social media: golfers remain deeply invested in the future of handicapping, and the conversation about what constitutes a truly fair competition is far from over.<\/p>\n \tThe Golfshake Facebook community was overwhelmingly sceptical about whether the World Handicap System creates a fair playing field in competitions. Around three-quarters of respondents felt it does not, with criticism focused on General Play scores, perceived handicap manipulation and the belief that higher handicappers enjoy too great an advantage in handicap events<\/a>. However, a significant minority argued that WHS itself is fundamentally sound, insisting the real issue is golfers failing to submit every score honestly rather than flaws in the system itself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The World Handicap System was supposed to provide a level playing field for golfers of all standards.
