{"id":735408,"date":"2026-08-12T07:58:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T07:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/735408\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T07:58:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T07:58:08","slug":"royal-navy-docks-in-harwich-after-60-year-absence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/735408\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Navy docks in Harwich after 60-year absence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Royal Navy ship has docked in Harwich for the first time since the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">HMS Severn anchored in the Essex port on Sunday for a crew change and was due to depart on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 80m-long (262ft) vessel is used for patrols around the UK coastline, where responding to Russian ships has become an increasingly common task.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lt Cdr Dominic Jacob, its executive officer, said crews wanted to make sure the vessels were not involved in &#8220;nefarious activity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We quite often get tasked on to Russian ships which are at sea \u2013 frigates, destroyers and such like,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We shadow them within the UK area of responsibility to make sure they don&#8217;t get up to any nefarious activity and just to act as a deterrent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Saturday, the Royal Navy said its warships and helicopters spent 21 days monitoring Russian activity in UK waters and the North Atlantic throughout July &#8211; a 25% rise on the previous year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Royal Navy ship has docked in Harwich for the first time since the 1960s.
