His last stay at the orbital outpost garnered global attention when Fincke was overcome with a mysterious ailment, losing the ability to speak for roughly 20 minutes, Fincke later told news outlets, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nasa-sick-astronaut-medical-evacuation-cc34793ffb73174f18443f2dd9c6ff2f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">including the AP<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqc99ub001t3b6rfqooq83o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ordeal prompted an urgent response from NASA. Fincke and his fellow SpaceX Crew-11 astronauts \u2014 NASA astronaut Zena Cardman, Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and cosmonaut Oleg Platonov of the Russian space agency, Roscosmos \u2014 returned home from the space station in mid-January, weeks earlier than expected.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqcaff400203b6rngdv89t0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The group\u2019s sudden departure marked the first time in history NASA had to cut short an ISS staffing mission for health reasons. At the time, the space agency did not disclose which astronaut had the medical concern or reveal the nature of the issue, prompting a wave of speculation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqccupa00253b6r1bfkknr9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Typically, NASA does not share details of medical emergencies or name the astronaut involved to protect their privacy, but Fincke identified himself weeks after the incident.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqcd20w00273b6rez2wgm67@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In an interview with AP, Fincke said that the medical event remains a mystery that NASA and medical researchers are working to solve. His lost ability to speak did not feel like choking, Fincke said, but his crewmates \u201cdefinitely saw that I was in distress\u201d and responded quickly. \u201cIt was all hands on deck within just a matter of seconds.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqcebg8002f3b6rqcnju2yj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA had said during the crew\u2019s journey home that the affected astronaut was in stable condition. And Fincke noted in a February <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASA\/status\/2026690961888161893\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement<\/a> that the agency had determined the crew should return to Earth to take advantage of \u201cadvanced medical imaging not available on the space station.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqcfzl0002i3b6rho1tk6ss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ISS is stocked with medical equipment, though it does not have all the tools typical of an emergency room.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqci5e5002p3b6rsz7eh9zo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unexpected medical problem set off a rapid series of events as NASA canceled a planned spacewalk, quickly scheduled the group\u2019s return trip, and then worked to speed up the launch of the space agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/13\/science\/spacex-crew-12-launch-nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">next staffing mission<\/a> to the orbiting outpost.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqcidz3002s3b6rzne0oznh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The departure of Fincke and his Crew-11 teammates left the station briefly staffed with only three astronauts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqci5pn002q3b6rciqyb93f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A group of four astronauts, referred to as Crew-12, arrived at the space station on February 14 , brining staffing levels back up to seven people \u2014 the number NASA typically desires to keep scientific experiments and other duties on track.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Longtime NASA astronaut Mike Fincke is stepping away from his role at the space agency.
