Very few actors will ever have the opportunity to star in a movie that genuinely changes the face of cinema. Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a> could have, but after tentatively agreeing, he backed away.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no denying that he\u2019s one of the greatest actors of his generation and one of modern Hollywood\u2019s biggest stars, but has DiCaprio ever been in a truly transformative picture? He\u2019s been in a lot of great ones, more than most of his peers, but you can\u2019t really say they\u2019ve forever altered the paradigm.<\/p>\n

James Cameron\u2019s Titanic did, obviously, albeit from a purely economic perspective. As the highest-grossing release of all time, the three-hour romantic epic redefined how much money it was possible for a single film to earn, and it cleaned up at the Academy Awards, but those are more superficial metrics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t as if the rest of the industry scrambled to emulate, replicate, or blatantly rip off the blockbuster undertaking, and three decades later, there\u2019s hardly an abundance of actors or filmmakers citing Titanic as one of the defining, seminal, and career-inspiring achievements ever committed to celluloid.<\/p>\n

As mentioned, game-changing movies are few and far between, but there was one at the turn of the millennium, and it sure as shit wasn\u2019t Titanic. Instead, it was the Wachowskis\u2019 The Matrix, which became the single most influential flick of the period, occasionally for the better, but mostly for the worst<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gun-fu, leather outfits, bullet time, and philosophical bullshit were suddenly everywhere in every genre, and as much as Keanu Reeves will never be known as the finest dramatist in the business, his blank-slate persona was ideal for John Anderson, who refuses to believe he\u2019s the most important figure in history until he can no longer deny his credentials that Neo is, in fact, \u2018The One\u2019.<\/p>\n

Would it have worked as well with a different actor in the lead? Maybe, although Will Smith was probably too charismatic and too big a personality<\/a>. DiCaprio is more than capable of disappearing into the parts that he plays, and in his hands, you could just as easily buy the mild-mannered office drone to saviour narrative.<\/p>\n

That was the plan, at least for a while, according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. \u201cWe go to Leonardo,\u201d he flatly recalled. \u201cHe said yes, we have meetings with him, and then he goes, \u2018You know, I can\u2019t go do another visual effects movie, having just finished Titanic\u2019, and he drops out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, he made The Beach, which was and still is the worst movie of his career<\/a>. DiCaprio didn\u2019t need The Matrix, and The Matrix didn\u2019t need him, but that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t wonder how both of their legacies would look today had he not changed his mind on committing.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
