{"id":736506,"date":"2026-08-13T09:02:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T09:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/736506\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T09:02:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T09:02:11","slug":"marine-heatwaves-are-cooking-our-ocean-ecosystems-and-will-only-become-more-common","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/736506\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine heatwaves are cooking our ocean ecosystems \u2013 and will only become more common"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may have heard reports of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-28\/marine-heatwave-pilbara-mass-fish-deaths\/104852574\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fish die-offs<\/a> or seen photos of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/aug\/12\/was-longest-and-most-intense-marine-heatwave-killed-coral-across-1500km-stretch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hauntingly bleached coral<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Those are just two signs a marine heatwave has swept through the sea.<\/p>\n<p>Marine heatwaves happen when the ocean remains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineconservation.org.au\/marine-heatwaves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">abnormally hot<\/a> for an extended period. While they may be invisible from the shore, their impacts can <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-marine-heatwave-in-northwest-australia-is-killing-huge-numbers-of-fish-its-heading-south-248139\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wreak havoc<\/a> underwater \u2013 killing various kinds of coral, seagrass and fish.<\/p>\n<p>As climate change continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-ocean-is-our-greatest-climate-regulator-it-must-be-a-stronger-part-of-climate-policy-and-action-171813\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warm the ocean<\/a>, marine heatwaves will only become more <a href=\"https:\/\/wamsi.org.au\/news\/more-frequent-and-more-extreme-marine-heatwaves-in-wa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">frequent and severe<\/a>. In this three-part series, we explore a range of emerging climate phenomena and consider how to respond to their destructive effects.<\/p>\n<p>The science of marine heatwaves<\/p>\n<p>Marine heatwaves are <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00382-019-04707-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">naturally occurring<\/a> weather patterns that can form when hotter water near the surface of the ocean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineconservation.org.au\/marine-heatwaves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">doesn\u2019t mix<\/a> with cooler water below. This is most common when conditions are hot, dry and windless. However, marine heatwaves can also develop when unusually strong currents <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/srep01277\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carry extra heat<\/a> from the tropics to colder ocean areas.<\/p>\n<p>To identify a marine heatwave, scientists measure ocean temperatures and compare those observed ocean temperatures with the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/asl2.70017\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">historical average temperature<\/a> \u2013 the baseline or \u201cnormal\u201d temperature of that location at a specific time of year. <\/p>\n<p>      Read more:<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-marine-heatwave-in-northwest-australia-is-killing-huge-numbers-of-fish-its-heading-south-248139\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A marine heatwave in northwest Australia is killing huge numbers of fish. It\u2019s heading south<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Marine heatwaves occur when the ocean is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpird.wa.gov.au\/environment-and-sustainability\/climate\/marine-heatwaves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hotter than 90%<\/a> of historical temperature records. To be considered a heatwave, this abnormal heat must last for at least <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.pocean.2015.12.014\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five consecutive days<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ocean temperatures vary according to local conditions. Given marine heatwaves are measured in relation to a region\u2019s normal seasonal ocean temperatures, they can happen anywhere and at any time of year. For example, a water temperature of 25\u00b0C at Western Australia\u2019s Ningaloo Reef might not seem warm for that tropical area. However, 25\u00b0C in the waters around Tasmania would be considered extreme.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.marpolbul.2024.117419\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terrestrial heatwaves<\/a> follow the same logic as marine heatwaves. But a land-based heatwave only needs to last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/news-and-media\/heatwaves-and-cold-snaps-in-australia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three days<\/a> to be classified as a heatwave. Those that are mobile, such as fish, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/conphys\/coae060\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can swim<\/a> to cooler waters. In contrast, coral, kelp or bottom-dwelling creatures such as sea urchins can\u2019t relocate. This means they are directly impacted by marine heatwaves. For example, they may <a href=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2025\/11\/14\/even-moderate-heat-waves-depress-sea-urchin-reproduction-along-the-pacific-coast\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struggle to reproduce<\/a> due to heat stress. They also suffer indirect impacts, such as a lack of food if species further down the food chain are wiped out by a marine heatwave.<\/p>\n<p>On land, marine heatwaves can be <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.abj3593\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economically and culturally<\/a> devastating for coastal communities. They can cost fisheries, aquaculture businesses and tourism operators <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-much-do-marine-heatwaves-cost-the-economic-losses-amount-to-billions-and-billions-of-dollars-170008\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">billions of dollars<\/a> in lost income. Marine heatwaves may also damage culturally significant sites, as in the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unsw.edu.au\/newsroom\/news\/2019\/02\/shark-bay--a-world-heritage-site-at-catastrophic-risk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shark Bay<\/a>, a World Heritage-listed marine ecosystem off the WA coast. They may also destroy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/research-topics\/environmental-issues\/climate-change\/blue-carbon-seascapes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blue carbon habitats<\/a>. The economic losses amount to billions and billions of dollars<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In February 2011, a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-018-31236-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">compound heatwave<\/a> \u2013 where a marine and a terrestrial heatwave happened together \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fmars.2021.645383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decimated ecosystems<\/a> across WA. On land, it killed trees and caused the endangered cockatoo population to crash. Beneath the sea, it triggered widespread <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5194\/os-8-545-2012\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coral bleaching<\/a> in the Pilbara, Ningaloo and <a href=\"https:\/\/wamsi.org.au\/app\/uploads\/2026\/03\/WA_coral_bleaching_timeline_FINAL_Mar30_2026.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houtman Abrolhos Islands<\/a> regions.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2024, another <a href=\"https:\/\/wamsi.org.au\/news\/more-frequent-and-more-extreme-marine-heatwaves-in-wa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">marine heatwave<\/a> swept through the waters off the coast of WA lasting several months. It was the state\u2019s longest, largest and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/information-centre\/news-and-stories\/worst-bleaching-event-record-wa-coral-reefs-following-long-lasting-and-widespread-marine-heatwave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most severe<\/a> marine heatwave ever. It killed <a href=\"https:\/\/wamsi.org.au\/app\/uploads\/2026\/03\/WA_coral_bleaching_timeline_FINAL_Mar30_2026.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about half<\/a> of the coral in the North West Shelf region.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, sea surface temperatures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noc.ac.uk\/news\/rolling-updates-inside-uks-unfolding-marine-heatwave?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=SocialSignIn&amp;utm_source=Facebook\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have surged<\/a> during the 2026 European summer, in some places by up to 5\u00b0C higher than average. It\u2019s heading south<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Worse under climate change<\/p>\n<p>Marine heatwaves are a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-018-0383-9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">natural part<\/a> of our planet\u2019s variable climate system.<\/p>\n<p>But climate change means they are becoming more <a href=\"https:\/\/wamsi.org.au\/news\/more-frequent-and-more-extreme-marine-heatwaves-in-wa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">common and severe<\/a>. They are also <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-018-0383-9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lasting longer<\/a>. The ocean\u2019s thermal baseline \u2013 or the natural temperature of the ocean \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00376-026-5876-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is rising<\/a> due to climate change. This means any temperature fluctuations <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-018-03732-9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">compound the effects<\/a> of this background warming.<\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00382-024-07226-x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climate drivers<\/a>, including the El Ni\u00f1o and La Ni\u00f1a climate patterns, can also intensify marine heatwaves. In Australia, El Ni\u00f1o typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/enso\/?ninoIndex=nino3.4&amp;index=rnino34&amp;period=weekly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warms the waters<\/a> off the east coast, heightening the risk of severe marine heatwaves there. La Ni\u00f1a tends to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/srep01277\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">push warm water<\/a> towards the west coast, driving extreme ocean temperatures off WA. <\/p>\n<p>However, because of climate change, large-scale climate patterns like El Ni\u00f1o and La Ni\u00f1a are no longer necessary to trigger marine heatwaves. It must be a stronger part of climate policy and action<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Where to from here<\/p>\n<p>To better understand the factors that drive marine heatwaves, we need further research that analyses changes in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.wace.2026.100906\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">air and ocean currents<\/a>. We should also prioritise research investigating the sub-surface ocean. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.wace.2026.100906\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Satellites<\/a> monitor the surface but many severe marine heatwaves remain hidden underwater, devastating marine life <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41558-023-01790-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">without detection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The most important step to reduce the impacts of marine heatwaves is to cut greenhouse gas emissions, limiting further ocean warming. At the same time, researchers are exploring other ways to help ecosystems adapt. These include introducing <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00338-026-02897-w\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thermal tolerant species<\/a> to vulnerable regions. <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/could-marine-cloud-brightening-reduce-coral-bleaching-on-the-great-barrier-reef-214308\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marine cloud brightening<\/a>, which aims to temporarily reduce ocean heating by making clouds more reflective, is another option being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>We must also invest in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5670\/oceanog.2024.508\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">modelling<\/a> to predict when future marine heatwaves may hit. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ae666d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Early warning systems<\/a> are also vital to ensure fisheries and conservation zones can prepare for these increasingly common underwater disasters.<\/p>\n<p>      Read more:<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/could-marine-cloud-brightening-reduce-coral-bleaching-on-the-great-barrier-reef-214308\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Could \u2018marine cloud brightening\u2019 reduce coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef?<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"You may have heard reports of fish die-offs or seen photos of hauntingly bleached coral.
