{"id":736849,"date":"2026-08-13T16:24:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T16:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/736849\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T16:24:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T16:24:09","slug":"waterford-shark-man-bitten-by-blue-shark-to-undergo-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/736849\/","title":{"rendered":"Waterford shark: Man bitten by blue shark to undergo surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The blue shark is a long-distance migrant that is present in Irish waters usually from June to October, when it is taken by recreational anglers on a catch-and-release basis, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheriesireland.ie\/fish-species\/blue-shark-prionace-glauca\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Inland Fisheries Ireland, external<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It says the blue shark is one of Ireland&#8217;s largest and most valuable marine sport fishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Jack Kelly, a marine biologist and cinematographer in County Galway, said they are &#8220;common all around Britain and Ireland during the summer months&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;You can definitely get them in numbers,&#8221; he told BBC Radio Ulster&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b007cps5\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Good Morning Ulster<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Kelly said all sharks are &#8220;so curious in an amazing way&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;If a shark approaches anything, really, it&#8217;s not like they have fingers to be able to investigate to see what it is. So they have this amazing curiosity about them where they&#8217;ll come, they&#8217;ll just kind of circle and try to check out what&#8217;s going on,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;You&#8217;ll often get them actually just really staring at you. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;For me, when I&#8217;m underwater they might give the camera a bump just to see what it is, so their curiosity for me is definitely something that stands out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Blue sharks can reach more than three metres in length and feed in open water on fish, squid, smaller sharks and sea birds. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The conservation status of the blue shark is listed as near threatened on the Irish Red List for cartilaginous fish and by the IUCN Red List, according to Inland Fisheries Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheriesireland.ie\/research\/marine-sportfish-tagging-programme\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Sportfishing Tagging Programme, external<\/a> tagged 19,309 blue sharks between 1970 and 2013 off the coast of Ireland, which accounts for 45% of all tagged fish since the beginning of the programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This is not the first time people have been bitten by sharks off the Irish coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 2018, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-45388517\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Belfast man who was angling caught a blue shark<\/a> and was bitten while bringing it on board a boat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His lower arm was seriously injured in an incident where he was helped by Crosshaven RNLI in Cork.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The blue shark is a long-distance migrant that is present in Irish waters usually from June to October,&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":736850,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[90,56,54,55,4407],"class_list":["post-736849","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-wildlife"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/736849","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=736849"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/736849\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/736850"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=736849"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=736849"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=736849"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
