Two people can go through the exact same hard, difficult situation and face different outcomes: one remains shaken for months, while the other is barely impacted. But we hardly know that the secret lies not in what happens to us, but in our mindset from within and how we react to it.A study by Psychologists Jing Luo, Bo Zhang, Mengyang Cao, and Brent W. Roberts collected data from hundreds of studies covering thousands of effect sizes, looking specifically at how the “Big Five” personality traits relate to stress. Their findings, published in Personality and Social Psychology Review in 2023.They explain that some personality traits help people keep stress lower, and what’s interesting is that it’s not just about being fearless or unbothered by life. It’s really about how someone naturally handles pressure, how they connect with the people around them, and how much they prepare for what’s coming. Here are 5 traits that help people manage stress better.

Extraversion

Extraverts are those people who tend to find social interaction energising rather than draining, and they usually have bigger social circles to depend on, which helps to build an inbuilt support system that softens the blow of stressful events. Researchers also noted that extraverts are more likely to focus on the upside of a difficult situation rather than dwelling on the downside. That change in focus alone can make an identical stressor feel far more manageable.

Emotional stability

People low in neuroticism, or high in emotional stability, simply experience less negative emotion day to day. Research suggests this works two ways: they perceive situations as less devastating in the first place, so they’re less likely to land in stressful situations at all. There’s also evidence that their fight-or-flight response is less easily triggered, meaning their bodies stay calmer under the same pressure that might spike someone else’s stress hormones.

Conscientiousness

Conscientious or careful people plan ahead, which quietly removes a lot of stress before it ever has the chance to build. They tend to avoid unnecessary risks, stay organised, and take care of practical things like health and finances by planning early. This isn’t about being unaffected by stress; it’s just about designing a well-planned life with fewer avoidable fires to put out in the first place, which helps develop this habit significantly over time.

Openness

Openness is related to curiosity, creativity, and getting comfortable with new experiences. People who develop this trait are more likely to feel unfamiliar or difficult situations as less threatening than those low in openness do, and treat change as interesting rather than alarming.

Agreeableness

Agreeable people are easier to get along with, which naturally reduces interpersonal friction, which is a big, and often invisible cause of daily stress. Fewer conflicts mean fewer stressful situations arising in the first place, and stronger relationships mean more support available when stress hits. In many ways, agreeableness works on two fronts at once, including prevention and cushioning.

Stress management- Representative Image (Photo via Canva) Stress makes people act strangely and behave in unpredictable ways.
