\n\tWidow\u2019s Bay\u00a0fans rejoice! Creator-showrunner Kate Dippold<\/a> has a progress report on the Season 2 writers\u2019 room.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s great,\u201d she said during a panel at Deadline\u2019s Contenders<\/a> Television: The Nominees Studio. \u201cWeek 3, feeling great. I think it\u2019s fun. I feel like I always look at Season 1 \u2014 what was really hard with that is having to lay all the groundwork. \u2018Haunted Island\u2019 sounds silly and terrible, honestly. I\u2019m still happy they all signed up. It\u2019s a tough pitch. I feel like a lot of groundwork was laid in Season 1 so you can buy it. So, it\u2019s making Season 2 much more fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThen, with a glance at her fellow panelist and lead actor Matthew Rhys<\/a>, she deadpanned, \u201cBut no Loftis.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to Dippold and Rhys, the panel chat included executive producer\/director Hira Murai and co-stars Kate O\u2019Flynn, Stephen Root<\/a>, Dale Dickey<\/a> and Jeff Hiller<\/a>. Watch their conversation below and scroll down for photos from the event.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn Apple TV<\/a> comedy series\u00a0Widow\u2019s Bay, Rhys stars as Tom Loftis, the slightly desperate mayor of an island off the coast of Massachusetts. Along with the town\u2019s hard-drinking fisherman Wyck (Root), and the town hall staff of Patricia (O\u2019Flynn), Rosemary (Dickey) and Dale (Hiller), Loftis tries to ignore a centuries-old island curse while attracting tourists to the island.<\/p>\n

\n\tMurai recalled facing one of the show\u2019s key challenges going into it. \u201cThe immediate thing I thought of is, if you had the wrong actor, this whole thing falls apart. And I\u2019m only saying this because I know Matthew hates getting compliments on-camera. And I honestly wasn\u2019t sure it was going to work until we met Matthew.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRhys, who also signed on as an EP, said he was on board from the get-go: \u201cI always knew I wanted to do it because I\u2019d never read anything like it. And it was so \u2018other\u2019. It was so needed. It was sort of refreshing. But the most important thing to me is I desperately wanted to know how it would end. Because I was like, \u201cYes, I know.\u201d And yes, and I was like, \u201cBut what\u2019s going to happen?\u201d When so much was teed up in the planning, I was like, \u201cOkay, what\u2019s going to happen here because I need to know. And the only way that\u2019ll happen is if I\u2019m in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also joked that his friends back home in Wales see exactly why he warmed to\u00a0Widow\u2019s Bay. \u201cThey said, \u2018That\u00a0is\u00a0Wales. It\u2019s like that\u2019s just a busman\u2019s holiday for you. There\u2019s nothing different about that. That\u2019s like an average afternoon in Fishguard [Wales].\u2019 So yeah, they were like, \u2018Well, of course you did that. That\u2019s where you came from.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tO\u2019Flynn\u2019s character of Patricia has become something of a popular phenomenon. Why does she think people relate so much to Patricia? \u201cShe\u2019s like people that are a bit annoying that don\u2019t do the right thing, and then sometimes they step up and they\u2019re brave, and sometimes you see them loving and sometimes you see them being a bit bitchy\u2026 That I find comforting TV, which is,\u00a0real people.\u00a0And I think that\u2019s what everyone\u2019s responding to. And I\u2019d say that they\u2019re responding to all our characters because all of them are so well written.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for what she wishes she could take from Patricia into her own life, O\u2019Flynn says, \u201cI wish I was as smart as her when it comes to the final girl montage creative problem-solving that she does. If I could knit that into my life, that would make it a hundred times better.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDickey said she immediately responded to the script and her character of Rosemary. \u201cI was laughing out loud, and I don\u2019t usually do that. It was just,\u00a0my god. I could picture the people in my head in this world. I could visualize them. And I related to her laidback-ness and her just self-assurance just to be who she is and say what she wants to say, whether it\u2019s annoying or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for what the cast would like to see in Season 2, Root said, \u201cI would love to know more about the backstory. What made Wyck Wyck? What kind of scenes did he see when he was a kid or a young man to make him to want to be a protector of the island to get him to the point where he couldn\u2019t stand it anymore and he said, \u2018No, I\u2019m not sitting back anymore. I\u2019m going to tell this mayor that I don\u2019t respect, that I\u2019m going to come out and I\u2019m going to sound the [warning] siren.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHiller said of playing Dale that his longtime background doing improv with Dippold came into play at times, even when it wasn\u2019t meant to. \u201cThat was actually very tempting. And I didn\u2019t always succeed. They said, \u2018We\u2019ll cut around that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe did however, sneak a bit of improv into the final cut. \u201cOne that I think I\u2019m weirdly proud of that literally no one has said that they liked is when Tom is talking and saying, \u2018I don\u2019t think this microphone is on.\u2019 And then I say, \u2018I can hear you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also enjoyed that the town pub, The Salty Whale, became a sort of de facto green room for the cast. \u201cWe would sit around in little director\u2019s chairs and it\u2019s just very exciting to be around other actors and especially actors like Dale and Steven are. You just said how many roles they\u2019ve been in, and every role comes with a story.
