{"id":741175,"date":"2026-08-17T20:56:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T20:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/741175\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T20:56:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T20:56:10","slug":"first-sighting-of-critically-endangered-bee-in-26-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/741175\/","title":{"rendered":"First sighting of critically endangered bee in 26 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A critically endangered species of bee has been spotted in Ireland for the first time in 26 years.<\/p>\n<p>The Silver-sided Nomad Bee was found in Co Offaly on 11 August by net-sweeping Devil&#8217;s-bit Scabious, a common habitat for the rare species.<\/p>\n<p>There have been just seven confirmed historic records of the bee for the island of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time the Nomad bee has been seen in Co Offaly. Previous sightings have been confirmed in counties Galway, Laois and Carlow.<\/p>\n<p>The Nomad Bee flies between mid-July to mid-September.<\/p>\n<p>Nomad bees are &#8216;cleptoparasites\u2019 meaning that, similar to a Cuckoo bird, they lay their eggs in the nest of a host species.<\/p>\n<p>Their larva then steals host resources, such as collected pollen, to complete development.<\/p>\n<p>This record follows on from new site records of the Small-scabious Mining Bee by the National Biodiversity Data Centre in August 2022, which followed a tip about the new site from a local wildlife recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Both species are assessed as \u2018Critically Endangered\u2019 on the Regional Red List of Irish Bees.<\/p>\n<p>The Silver-sided Nomad bee and Small-scabious Mining Bee are two of the 15 rarest and most threatened pollinators that the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan will be monitoring during 2026 to 2030.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A critically endangered species of bee has been spotted in Ireland for the first time in 26 years.&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":741176,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[90,56,54,55,4407],"class_list":["post-741175","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-wildlife"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/741175","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=741175"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/741175\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/741176"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=741175"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=741175"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=741175"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
