{"id":741984,"date":"2026-08-18T15:44:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T15:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/741984\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T15:44:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T15:44:09","slug":"one-dead-and-hundreds-ill-in-uk-salmonella-outbreak-linked-to-imported-eggs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/741984\/","title":{"rendered":"One dead and hundreds ill in UK salmonella outbreak &#8216;linked to imported eggs&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">One person has died and hundreds of others have been affected by a salmonella outbreak in the UK, health officials have said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said the food poisoning outbreak &#8220;may be linked to eggs imported from outside the UK&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Babies and people as old as 90 have been affected, it added. <\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of salmonella typically start 12 to 72 hours after infection Credit: iStock<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Salmonella generally causes a self-limiting gastroenteritis, with symptoms including stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting, or fever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">More than a third of people affected in the outbreak, 38%, were admitted to hospital, with two people developing potentially life-threatening bloodstream infections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">UKHSA said between August 11 last year and August 1 this year, 207 cases have been confirmed: 199 in England, six in Scotland, one in Wales, and one in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Subscribe for free to <a class=\"qNUzV q7LZa\" href=\"https:\/\/itvnews.substack.com\/\" data-testid=\"fecp-link-anchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">our weekly newsletter<\/a> for exclusive and original coverage from ITV News. Direct to your inbox every Friday morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">London, where 47 cases were confirmed, and Yorkshire and Humber (38) were the most affected regions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Hannah Charles, lead epidemiologist for gastrointestinal infections at UKHSA, said they were working with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and other public health agencies to investigate the outbreak. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Jacquelyn McCormick, head of incidents at the FSA, said the exact cause has not yet been identified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">She added that investigations so far have identified links to eggs imported from outside the UK, mainly used by food service and catering establishments such as restaurants or cafes, as a potential source.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">&#8220;There is no evidence that UK-produced eggs are affected,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Want a quick and expert briefing on the biggest news stories?
