It\u2019s finally raining<\/a> in the south of the UK, bringing to an end the over 60 day dry spell<\/a> in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n

The changing weather pattern<\/a> will be welcomed by many, including farmers whose crops are dying<\/a> and gardeners who have been restricted by hosepipe bans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But the wet weather<\/a> is nowhere near enough to end the drought<\/a> that is gripping large swathes of the country and more restrictions could even be possible due to the prolonged period of dry weather.<\/p>\n

The first hearing day of the lawsuit against Meta over alleged child harm ended yesterday.<\/p>\n

A coalition of 29 US states initially brought the action against Meta Platforms in 2023 in California, accusing the company of deliberately designing its platforms to be addictive to young people.<\/p>\n

A whistleblower\u2019s testimony<\/p>\n

California\u2019s attorney general, Rob Bonta, said the hearing will resume with the continuation of B\u00e9jar\u2019s testimony. The\u00a0trial is\u00a0expected to last 5-7 weeks.<\/p>\n

How Ulez is improving children\u2019s health in London<\/p>\n

A study has revealed that children\u2019s lungs grew bigger and stronger after the introduction of the ultra-low emission zone (Ulez), which restricted the most polluting vehicles from entering London.<\/p>\n

The researchers described it as a vindication of the policy, which has been criticised as a burden on motorists.<\/p>\n

What you need to know<\/p>\n

Previous research showed that by the age of eight or nine, children living in London\u2019s most polluted areas had lung capacity that was 5\u201310 per cent lower than that of children living elsewhere.<\/p>\n

This increased their risk of developing respiratory diseases such as asthma, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and premature death later in life.<\/p>\n

The study<\/p>\n

Researchers from Queen Mary University of London recruited 1,664 children aged six to nine in London and 1,750 in Luton.<\/p>\n

They then measured the children\u2019s lung health and size annually to assess how air quality changes after the introduction of Ulez affected their lung development.<\/p>\n

The children in London initially had much smaller lungs than those in Luton, but after Ulez, their lungs\u2019 health improved until they were comparable with those in Luton.<\/p>\n

What Khan has said<\/p>\n

For years, politicians and pundits opposed to the Ulez have cynically sought to turn questions of public health into a crude culture war. Today, though, it\u2019s clear that we\u2019re winning the battle against toxic air in the capital \u2013 and it\u2019s London\u2019s children who are reaping the rewards.<\/p>\n

Erin Patterson challenges convictions over mushroom murders<\/p>\n

Erin Patterson was jailed for life last September for murdering three relatives and trying to kill another after giving them a poisonous mushroom meal.<\/p>\n

But now, Patterson is returning to court in an attempt to overturn her conviction.<\/p>\n

Patterson\u2019s lawyers say there are pieces of evidence the jurors saw which were not relevant and prejudicial, causing a substantial miscarriage of justice.<\/p>\n

Issues with prosecution<\/p>\n

Her lawyers argued that the prosecution had been inconsistent over the motive, initially telling the court they would not put forward a specific motive, but later suggesting that one did exist.<\/p>\n

They criticised the five days Patterson was cross-examined by barrister Nanette Rogers.<\/p>\n

Patterson said it was \u201cunfair and oppressive\u201d.<\/p>\n

Because of the global scrutiny on the case, steps were taken to ensure the jury were insulated from outside influences. <\/p>\n

\n\u2018Fundamental irregularity\u2019\n<\/p>\n

However, Patterson\u2019s lawyers argued a \u201cfundamental irregularity\u201d occurred which \u201cfatally undermined\u201d the integrity of the verdicts.<\/p>\n

This is because the jury shared a hotel with members of the prosecution among others.<\/p>\n

The judge at the time said there was no evidence the jury interacted with anyone linked to the case.<\/p>\n

\nWhat happens next?\n<\/p>\n

The result of the appeal will not be announced immediately after these hearings, as reaching a decision could take months. <\/p>\n

If the three judges overturn her convictions, there are two options \u2013 a retrial or acquittal.<\/p>\n

Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from tennis after testing positive for cocaine. <\/p>\n

The Australian submitted a sample during the Mallorca Open on 22 June that was later found to contain benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.<\/p>\n

Kyrgios\u00a0has been provisionally suspended since 4 August.<\/p>\n

The International Tennis Integrity Agency said Kyrgios could appeal against the provisional suspension \u201cbut has not done so to date\u201d.<\/p>\n

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has ruled out UK-produced eggs or poultry as the source and said the evidence suggests imported eggs are responsible.<\/p>\n

Where have the cases been?<\/p>\n

Most cases have been in England, including 47 in London and 38 in Yorkshire and the Humber. There have been six cases in Scotland, one in Wales and another in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone who is concerned about symptoms should contact their GP or out-of-hours service in the first instance.\u201d<\/p>\n

To prevent the spread, she advised: \u201cWash your hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and before preparing and handling food, cook food thoroughly.<\/p>\n

The most commonly mangled words in the UK have been revealed in a new survey, as well as our attitudes surrounding pronunciation.<\/p>\n

OnePoll has conducted a survey on the most commonly mispronounced words in the UK.<\/p>\n

The research was commissioned by Czech car manufacturer Skoda to highlight the fact that many Britons pronounce the brand\u2019s name wrong \u2013 \u201cS-co-der\u201d instead of the correct \u201cSh-co-da\u201d.<\/p>\n

A closer look at the survey<\/p>\n

The survey also revealed how Britons feel about mispronounced words.<\/p>\n

85 per cent of respondents had someone correct them after a mispronunciation, with 25 per cent feeling embarrassed afterwards.<\/p>\n

27 per cent admitted they continued using the wrong pronunciation anyway. <\/p>\n

52 per cent thought it shows respect for language, while 38 per cent thought it made them appear more knowledgeable.<\/p>\n

34 per cent thought it made them seem more professional.<\/p>\n

38 per cent said that the way someone pronounces words could affect the impression they have of them.<\/p>\n

How Ikea is taking on eBay and Vinted with second-hand site<\/p>\n

Ikea is set to launch its own second-hand selling site later this year, which will allow shoppers signed up to its membership to buy and sell pre-owned Ikea items locally.<\/p>\n

Already trialled in other countries<\/p>\n

The scheme follows trials of online second-hand marketplaces in Spain and Norway. <\/p>\n

It also comes five years after the world\u2019s biggest furniture retailer began buying and selling used Ikea items in some of its UK stores.<\/p>\n

On the Spanish version, selling is made easier with price suggestions given by Ikea and pre-filled product descriptions.<\/p>\n

Ikea also offers sellers 15 per cent extra on the price of the item if they agree to be paid with an Ikea gift card.<\/p>\n

When will the drought come to an end?<\/p>\n

Over 70 per cent of England and all of Wales are currently in drought<\/a>. Nine water companies have introduced hosepipe bans<\/a>, affecting more than 27 million people across England and Wales \u2013 Severn Trent Water and South Staffordshire Water have both asked for customers to cut back on usage.<\/p>\n

Most of the UK will see some form of rain this week, however, the areas that need it the most will not see enough. <\/p>\n

On Friday, the Environment Agency said reservoir storage in England had fallen<\/a> to 65.9 per cent, which is 13.8 per cent below the average for this time of year. Most river<\/a> levels are below normal, with almost a third of sites now considered exceptionally low, the regulator said.<\/p>\n

A drought is considered over when water resources, including reservoirs, rivers and groundwater, return to normal levels, which usually takes several months of above average rainfall.<\/p>\n

Following last summer\u2019s dry weather, some parts of the UK remained in drought until January this year and some hosepipe bans remained in place until February. <\/p>\n

\u201cRivers, reservoirs and groundwater stores tend to respond much more slowly than the weather itself,\u201d said Dr Jonathan Eden, Associate Professor in Climate and Environmental Change at Coventry University.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn many areas, we would need several weeks of sustained rainfall, and in some cases months, before water resources recover to more normal levels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Could more water companies introduce hosepipe bans?<\/p>\n

Despite the rain, it\u2019s possible that more water companies could be compelled to introduce hosepipe bans before the winter. <\/p>\n

It is up to water companies to introduce hosepipe bans, while the EA \u2013 or equivalent regulator in the devolved nations \u2013 is responsible for declaring a drought. <\/p>\n

There has been some tension between the regulators and water companies on this, and the EA has been critical of some water companies for not introducing hosepipe bans sooner.<\/p>\n

For example, the EA is warning that Britain\u2019s longest river, the River Severn<\/a>, is at risk of drying out, which would be catastrophic for the environment<\/a>. However, the main water company in the region, Severn Trent, is yet to introduce a hosepipe ban.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the EA told The i Paper it \u201cencourages an earlier use of Temporary Use Bans to protect public water supplies and preserve the environment\u201d.<\/p>\n

A plan under consideration by Ofwat may also allow water companies to use dynamic pricing at times of drought<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How much rain do we need for restrictions to end?<\/p>\n

After two months of virtually no rain, parts of the UK will need months of above-average rainfall for restrictions to be lifted. <\/p>\n

In a briefing on Tuesday, Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern explained England and Wales has received 150mm less rainfall than average since April. To put that into perspective, the average rainfall for the whole of September in England is 68.5mm. <\/p>\n

McGivern said it was \u201ctoo simplistic\u201d to say England and Wales needed 150mm of rainfall to end the drought, particularly as the hot weather has caused water to evaporate more quickly leading to \u201ceven more of a sorry state in terms of dry ground\u201d. <\/p>\n

Will we be saved by a wet winter?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s clear England and Wales need a wet autumn and winter to replenish rivers and reservoirs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This happened last winter following the summer 2025 drought and saved parts of Britain from water shortages. <\/p>\n

As Britain\u2019s weather changes due to climate change<\/a>, it is generally expected that our summers will become drier and our winters will become wetter.<\/p>\n

McGivern said a couple of factors \u201cload the dice\u201d towards Britain having a wet winter, including the upcoming El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>, which typically brings heavier rainfall to the UK in the colder months.<\/p>\n

Another factor is the current high sea temperatures<\/a>, which loads the atmosphere with excess moisture.<\/p>\n

However, there are many factors that impact the UK\u2019s weather and a wet winter is not a given. <\/p>\n
