Jason Statham reunites with Plane director Jean-François Richet for Mutiny, opening in US theaters August 21, casting Statham as a bodyguard framed for murder who boards a cargo ship to unravel an international conspiracy. Early tracking pegs the opening between $8 million and $12 million, a modest tally by Statham’s standards, with actual numbers due once the weekend closes out Sunday.

Jason Statham trades planes for boats this time, teaming back up with director Jean-François Richet for a straightforward promise: betrayal, a cargo ship, and nowhere to run. His character Cole Reed, a former Special Forces operative turned bodyguard, gets framed for his billionaire boss’s murder and decides the only way to clear his name is to hunt down the real killers himself, one deck at a time. It’s the kind of stripped-down, fists-first setup that has kept Statham’s career afloat for two decades, and Lionsgate is banking on that loyalty to fill theaters starting August 21. Early tracking suggests a modest opening, so the real story this weekend might be whether Statham’s fanbase still shows up in numbers, or whether Mutiny quietly slips into the pile of his more forgettable outings.

A high-stakes reunion on the high seas

Jason Statham is back in theaters this Friday. Mutiny opens nationwide on August 21, 2026, reuniting the actor with French director Jean-François Richet, who steered him through 2023’s Plane. Distributed by Lionsgate, the action-thriller casts Statham as Cole Reed, a former Special Forces operative and ex-London police officer working as a bodyguard when everything goes wrong.

A revenge mission packed with intrigue

Framed for the murder of his billionaire boss in Bangkok, Reed boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to find the real killers, only to uncover an international conspiracy. The supporting cast includes Annabelle Wallis, Jason Wong, Roland Møller, Arnas Fedaravičius, Ramon Tikaram and Adrian Lester. The screenplay comes from Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis, with Statham and Marc Butan producing. At a lean 95 minutes, the film wastes little time getting to the mayhem.

Modest projections and rough reviews

Early tracking from Box Office Pro projects an opening between $8 million and $12 million in North America. That would land below Statham’s recent openers The Beekeeper ($16.5 million) and A Working Man ($15.5 million), but roughly in line with Wrath of Man ($8.3 million) and The Expendables 4 ($8 million).

Critics have been less kind. Variety framed the film as Die Hard on a boat, comparing Statham to Bruce Willis in that familiar mold. ScreenRant went further, calling it possibly the least remarkable of the actor’s recent action outings. For a star whose brand rests on delivering reliable genre thrills, that verdict stings, though Statham’s audiences have often shrugged off reviews before.

A leak, a date shuffle, and a long partnership

The film’s rollout hit a snag this week. On August 19, 2026, the film accidentally appeared on Prime Video for about an hour before being pulled, 2 days ahead of its theatrical debut. The date itself was also a moving target: Lionsgate originally penciled in a January 2026 release before shifting the film to late summer.
