Match scorecard<\/a><\/p>\nGeorge Hill played a leading role as Yorkshire put themselves into a commanding position heading into the last day of their County Championship relegation battle with Hampshire.<\/p>\n
All-rounder Hill only scored 37 but was a key part of a 58-run stand with Dom Bess for the ninth wicket, as Yorkshire set Hampshire a formidable 278 runs to win.<\/p>\n
Having taken a first-innings five-for, Hill broke the deadlock of Hampshire’s innings, before Ben Coad and Adam Lyth’s breakthroughs made the visitors favourites on the final day.<\/p>\n
Hampshire will need 172 runs to win, Yorkshire seven wickets.<\/p>\n
A home victory would leave them a point behind Yorkshire, and safety, whereas the White Rose county could build out a 36-point gap on the relegation zone as the Championship heads towards a thrilling finale.<\/p>\n
After taking five late wickets the previous evening, Hampshire had brought the match back into the balance but Yorkshire spent the first two sessions making sure it was clear they were in charge.<\/p>\n
As had been the case throughout the opening two days, the flow of the run-scoring was glacial due to a combination of a dry pitch that didn’t allow the ball to come on and a slow outfield.<\/p>\n
Therefore, Yorkshire’s batters had to graft to build out a lead \u2013 which began at 111 on the third day.<\/p>\n
Hampshire were hoping to chase around 150, and certainly not above 200, but a failure to build pressure meant the visitors could creep that number up and up.<\/p>\n
Nothing was overly pretty, summed up by Matthew Revis scoring 16 off 62 balls before Andrew Neal managed to turn one off the straight and pass his outside edge.<\/p>\n
Jonny Bairstow – who was an injury doubt after injuring his hand while keeping, and would not take the gloves later in the day – added some run-scoring impetus.<\/p>\n
The Yorkshire skipper plopped two slog sweeps over the boundary as he took the lead over 200 with Wharton and George Hill.<\/p>\n
The hosts predominantly bowled spin, with Neal and Felix Organ racking up 40 overs between them. They were also the only two Hampshire wicket-takers on the day.<\/p>\n
Having bowled Revis, left-armer Neal repeated the trick by bowling Bairstow, while Organ dismissed Wharton with the assistance of Ali Orr at short leg.<\/p>\n
But further scalps had to wait with Hill and Bess putting on a significant lead-growing 58 runs for the ninth wicket.<\/p>\n
Organ rounded out the innings by bowling Hill and, after 18 more runs were stuck onto the requirement, Bess was strangled down the legside.<\/p>\n
It meant Hampshire were set 278 runs to win, a large target that would need patience, albeit with the pitch flattening out and bounce truer.<\/p>\n
They initially looked in control of things, but Hill, Coad and spinners Bess and Lyth earned rewards for refusing to give away simple runs.<\/p>\n
Hill struck first when he bowled the same top-of-off delivery that had earned him five wickets in the first innings, to square up and castle Orr.<\/p>\n
Coad’s delivery was closer to a fifth stump line but drew an unconvinced prod from Gubbins to edge to slip.<\/p>\n
Lyth struck with his first delivery as Jake Lehmann loosely attempted a swiping drive, which leapt out a foothold and looped to second slip.<\/p>\n
Toby Albert and Tom Prest guided Hampshire to close without a further loss, with an intriguing day four in store.<\/p>\n
