Veteran rider turned exercise rider Patrick Valenzuela was unseated from a horse slated for a workout Sunday morning at Del Mar and was taken to nearby Scripps La Jolla Hospital for observation.<\/p>\n

The 62-year-old veteran was on a 3-year-old colt named Fire Mountain out of trainer Peter Eurton\u2019s barn shortly after 9 a.m. (PT). Witnesses say the horse ducked in at one point, dumping Valenzuela.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe hadn\u2019t even gotten into the work yet,\u201d Eurton noted. \u201cI was on the front side (near the grandstand) and they went behind the (infield) screen and when the horse came back into view there was no him (Valenzuela) in the saddle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Valenzuela appeared to try to get up at first but then chose to take a seat under the rail until paramedics arrived. He was put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cI talked to Patrick\u2019s brother and he said he\u2019s just a little body sore,\u201d Eurton said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t look like there\u2019s anything wrong with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fire Mountain was fine and is back at Eurton\u2019s barn.<\/p>\n

Valenzuela rode on and off for more than 35 years after winning his first race in 1978. He had 4,372 winners and more than $166 million in purses. He rode dozens of major stakes winners, including scores in the 1989 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) on Sunday Silence. He also won seven Breeders\u2019 Cup races.<\/p>\n

Since arriving at Del Mar this summer Valenzuela\u2019s been working several horses for different trainers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s such a gamer,\u201d Eurton states. \u201cHe wants to come back so bad. I wanted to put him on something as soon as he got reinstated.\u201d<\/p>\n
