We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/ridley-scott-bfi-hollywood-films-b2840794.html\" title=\"Ridley Scott makes eye-catching claim about the quality of current Hollywood films\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ridley Scott<\/a> has responded to Quentin Tarantino naming Black Hawk Down the best film of the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>The 2001 war drama, directed by Scott, topped a list of the century\u2019s best films selected by Tarantino during an appearance on Bret Easton Ellis\u2019s podcast last year.<\/p>\n<p>The Pulp Fiction filmmaker selected the film ahead of others including Pixar animation Toy Story 3, Tokyo-set romance Lost in Translation, and historical drama There Will Be Blood.<\/p>\n<p>Scott was asked about Tarantino\u2019s choice during a new interview with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/film\/article\/ridley-scott-im-not-a-film-maker-im-an-influencer-qfqqrfflz?t=1787469330466\">The Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2291322114...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Ridley Scott and Jacob Elordi at the premiere of 'The Dog Stars'\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Ridley Scott and Jacob Elordi at the premiere of &#8216;The Dog Stars&#8217; (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wonder what he was on, because whatever it is, I want some,\u201d he remarked. Asked if he considered it the best film of the century, Scott replied: \u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that he had not spoken to Tarantino about the interview, but his brother, the late filmmaker Tony Scott, \u201cknew him well\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTony adored Quentin and, I think, Quentin adored Tony,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the interview, Scott railed against the uniformity of storytelling in modern cinema, claiming that crime dramas and superhero films had oversatured the market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, everything now is about a murdered girl in the woods, or an FBI agent who is better than anyone else \u2013 or a superhero,\u201d he said. \u201cF*** me! There have to be other stories to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-2247562882.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Quentin Tarantino pictured last November\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Quentin Tarantino pictured last November (Getty Images for Epic Games)<\/p>\n<p>Scott, 88, has directed more than 30 films across his career, including modern classics such as Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma &amp; Louise, and Gladiator.<\/p>\n<p>His latest film, The Dog Stars, is out in cinemas next week, and sees Jacob Elordi (Euphoria; Wuthering Heights) play a civilian pilot drawn into action after humanity has been ravaged by a deadly flu pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The film also stars Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Guy Pierce, and Benedict Wong.<\/p>\n<p>Scott\u2019s previous effort was the 2024 sequel Gladiator II, a follow-up to the Russell Crowe-starring sword-and-sandals epic. <\/p>\n<p>In a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/gladiator-2-review-cast-paul-mescal-denzel-washington-b2648792.html\">four-star review for The Independent<\/a>, critic Clarisse Loughrey wrote: \u201cGladiator II is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/gladiator-2-ridley-scott-barry-keoghan-cast-b2644749.html\">equal in scale and spectacle <\/a>[to the original] and weighted with metaphor, but it\u2019s also shot through with the kind of wry, absurdist slant that\u2019s come to dominate Scott\u2019s work of the last decade and a half, from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/napoleon-review-joaquin-phoenix-b2447172.html\">Napoleon<\/a> to Alien: Covenant. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt times, Gladiator II is pure camp.
