NASA funds 18 futuristic spaceflight ideas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-9710fadc-9cc8-11f1-9c98-ed8497835574\">NASA is giving a financial boost to nearly 20 technology investigations to help fuel the incubation of tomorrow&#8217;s spaceflight research capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/about-niac\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/about-niac\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIAC<\/a>) program has selected 18 projects for this year&#8217;s Phase I awards, which will each split a total of $3.2 million in development funding. NIAC is designed to bolster technology breakthroughs that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> could use on future <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space<\/a> missions.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9710fadc-9cc8-11f1-9c98-ed8497835574-2\">This year&#8217;s awards include an array of mission concepts and research proposals NASA views as having &#8220;transformative potential,&#8221; according to a July 29 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-awards-2026-innovative-technology-concepts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-awards-2026-innovative-technology-concepts\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announcement of winners<\/a>. Among them are ideas for hardening spacecraft to explore and withstand the harsh conditions of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venus<\/a>, radioisotope-heated lunar spacesuits and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/niac\/niac-studies\/dimming-the-sun-dimsun-using-controllable-dust-cloud-to-reduce-solar-insolation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/niac\/niac-studies\/dimming-the-sun-dimsun-using-controllable-dust-cloud-to-reduce-solar-insolation\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">using space dust<\/a> to partially block out <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> to reduce solar radiation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9710fc80-9cc8-11f1-8a11-d75f8c6d613a\">The selected projects aren&#8217;t actual NASA missions, but serve as a sampling of technologies the agency sees as potentially contributing to projects like establishing a moon base as part of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Achieving that will require more than incremental technological advancement. One of the NIAC winning ideas includes the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/niac\/niac-studies\/power-over-fiber-to-enable-a-lunar-underground-explorer-lux\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/niac\/niac-studies\/power-over-fiber-to-enable-a-lunar-underground-explorer-lux\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lunar Underground eXplorer<\/a> (LUX), from Gilly Elor, at Texas-based Stone Aerospace, Inc. LUX would send hovering robots to map the potentially miles-long lava tubes beneath <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a>&#8216;s Mare Tranquilitatitis. (Image credit: Stone Aerospace, Inc.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9710fe56-9cc8-11f1-a940-c56985bba975\">Another NIAC winner aims to map the continents of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>-like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/exoplanets\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/exoplanets\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17738-exoplanets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/exoplanets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exoplanets<\/a> orbiting nearby <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a>. Today, we can determine the size and makeup of exoplanets, but discerning their physical features isn&#8217;t something that&#8217;s been attempted on a large scale.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Stankus, from Brookhaven Science Associates in New York, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/mapping-alien-continents-achieving-optical-vlbi-for-exoplanet-imaging\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/mapping-alien-continents-achieving-optical-vlbi-for-exoplanet-imaging\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">proposes<\/a> designing a new type of &#8220;nulling interferometer,&#8221; which uses data from different telescopes to cancel out a star&#8217;s light, via a technique called &#8220;dynamic hierarchical nulling.&#8221; His idea would merge data from a pair of &#8220;nuller&#8221; space telescopes positioned about 60 miles (100 kilometers) apart to achieve a resolution fine enough to detect the contrast of surface features on exoplanets 10 billion times dimmer than their star.<\/p>\n<p>Another award-winning concept comes from Michael Rubenstein and Northwestern University. They propose exploring <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a>&#8216;s rings by throwing thousands of &#8220;femtosats&#8221; (small <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellite<\/a> probes weighing less than 100 grams) into the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30372-gas-giants.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30372-gas-giants.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30372-gas-giants.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gas giant<\/a>&#8216;s orbit.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/niac\/actively-steerable-femtosat-constellations-for-in-situ-exploration-of-saturns-rings-atmosphere-and-magnetosphere\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/niac\/actively-steerable-femtosat-constellations-for-in-situ-exploration-of-saturns-rings-atmosphere-and-magnetosphere\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">project&#8217;s page<\/a> on NASA&#8217;s website, &#8220;Conducting in-situ surveys of Saturn&#8217;s rings with a single flagship mission, such as Cassini, would carry an unacceptably high risk of mission failure due to particle collisions.&#8221; Instead, the femtosat fleet proposal suggests flying 10,000 spacecraft into Saturn&#8217;s rings, knowing a significant portion could be lost. &#8220;The distributed nature of the proposed mission means it can accept a risk that could destroy many of [the] femtosats in the constellation, making in-situ survey of the ring possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every innovation, every leap in technology, starts with a seed of an idea,&#8221; Phillip Williams, NIAC&#8217;s acting program executive, said in NASA&#8217;s statement. &#8220;The NIAC program allows NASA to germinate those seeds and determine if there&#8217;s something that could be grown to benefit future space missions and our nation&#8217;s aerospace economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NASA is giving a financial boost to nearly 20 technology investigations to help fuel the incubation of tomorrow&#8217;s&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":747399,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[90,416,56,54,55],"class_list":["post-747398","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-space","tag-science","tag-space","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/747398","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=747398"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/747398\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/747399"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=747398"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=747398"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=747398"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
