Match scorecard<\/a><\/p>\nNorthamptonshire completed a quite outstanding all-round display 35 minutes after lunch as they defeated Lancashire by 316 runs in the County Championship match at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n
Resuming on 24-2, Lancashire were bowled out for 129, debutant Ben Walkden top-scoring with 22 not out. <\/p>\n
Ben Sanderson claimed 2-32 to give him match figures of 6-71, but this was a triumph for every member of the visitors’ five-man attack.<\/p>\n
Luke Procter’s team are hoping to return to the First Division for the first time since they were relegated in 2023 and no one could doubt their credentials as they outclassed their opponents and completed a victory that leaves them four points behind second-placed Kent in a high-quality second tier.<\/p>\n
Northamptonshire’s bowlers made their first breakthrough when Liam Guthrie inswinger snaked inside nightwatchman Tom Bailey’s loose drive. <\/p>\n
Bailey’s departure for 19 was followed next over by that of Josh Bohannon for 10, when the stand-in skipper lost his off stump to a fine ball from Procter that left him off the pitch.<\/p>\n
Five overs later, Arav Shetty was leg-before to Sanderson for 11 to leave Lancashire languishing on 77-5 and there had been no addition when Rocky Flintoff hooked Procter straight to Saif Zaib at a precisely placed deep square leg.<\/p>\n
The most bizarre dismissal of the season followed shortly afterwards when Joe Moores was out obstructing the field after he had played a ball from Procter into the ground and caught it as it bounced up in order to prevent it going anywhere near the stumps. <\/p>\n
The Northamptonshire fielders appealed confidently, the umpires consulted, Moores was on his way for two, leaving Lancashire 82-7.<\/p>\n
Walkden avoided a king pair on his first-class debut and got off the mark to his ninth delivery when he pushed Yuzi Chahal towards mid-off for a single. <\/p>\n
He soon lost his eighth-wicket partner, George Balderson, who was caught at short-leg by George Bartlett off Calvin Harrison for six.<\/p>\n
Lunch was delayed by 15 minutes to see if the game could be concluded but Walkden and Noman Ali held out until the interval. <\/p>\n
Ali was then caught at leg slip by Zaib off Guthrie for three and the match ended when Mitch Stanley was bowled by Harrison for 10.<\/p>\n
Lancashire’s defeat was their second-heaviest in terms of runs to another county and only the fifth time they have lost to Northamptonshire at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

“It’s pretty obvious we were out-skilled in probably every facet of the game. Obviously, it’s frustrating, it stings, probably stings for a few days now.<\/p>\n
“It’s incredibly frustrating. It feels like we’re having good chats, it feels like the work that the boys are putting in, in practice with the coaches is really valuable. <\/p>\n
“It feels like we’re making forward strides with that. Just ultimately, for whatever reason, it’s not quite translating out into the middle yet.<\/p>\n
“Everyone knows that confidence comes from winning and performing. That’s pretty obvious. It’s really hard because as a club, we’re trying to develop younger players who we think are incredibly talented and have got a really bright future, not only with us as a club, but just in the game of cricket in general.”<\/p>\n
Northamptonshire head coach Darren Lehmann:<\/p>\n
“That was a really pleasing performance. We lost the toss, it did a little bit early on and we were in a bit of bother at 100 for five. But I thought George Bartlett played one of the knocks of the year and we got to 280.<\/p>\n
“That was the best we’ve bowled all year, I think. To attack the stumps and to put it in good areas all the time was exceptional from the bowling unit.<\/p>\n
“Everyone contributed: Vasco’s hundred, Saif Zaib’s quick fifty, Procter opening and getting us a start. Everybody doing the team things. I’m really pleased for them all.<\/p>\n
“That was a really good four-day wicket. I think it was one of the better ones I’ve seen at Old Trafford.
